Text (English translation)Town of Thetford The jurors say upon their oath that Geoffrey, vicar of the church of All Saints, Sudbury, came to Thetford on 14th June (1381) and made a proclamation and uprising, and exacted by extortion a fine of 28 marks from Simon Barbour, then mayor, for not burning down the aforesaid town, against the king's peace. Also that William Metefeld junior of Brandon was a common leader of wrongdoers to the house of John Strakowr and to the manor of Methwold on 15th and 16th June (1381), and made a fine of 6 marks at Bromehill that is unpaid. Also that John Phylyp, John Monk and Roger Peper were in the company of John Gelder, chief leader of wrongdoers, on those days. Also that William Metefeld senior was a receiver of goods from John Strakowr for one night, and afterwards handed them over to the aforesaid John. Also that Osbert Mundeforth was made a chief leader [knight: deleted] against his will. Also that Thomas Gyssynge junior was a common leader [knight: deleted] of his own free will. John Gelder, staying in Bury St Edmunds, was a common leader of wrongdoers and was captured by the men of Thetford, because the aforesaid John had on him 6 marks 28 and a half d. and had a horse, saddle and bridle, and a sword and shield worth 2 marks, the which chattels were in the custody of John Berd, Richard Paltok and Thomas Walter.
