Text (English translation)Clacklose Laurence Cok and associate jurors, present that Robert Tuwe of Littleport, Thomas de Breccham of the same, John de Estcroft of the same and Richard Lodere of the same along with others unknown went to Southery on Monday 17th June 1381 at the time of the uprising and rumour, and broke into the manor there and the houses of the abbot and Convent of Bury St Edmunds and feloniously took and carried away 100 silver shillings and other precious objects worth 40s. And they burnt rolls and muniments of the said abbot they found there, against the lord king's peace. Also they say that John Man of Wretton went to the great society against the king's peace rising up on Sunday 16th June 1381 at the time of the uprising and rumour, and incited and gathered them to come to the hundred of Clacklose to destroy and throw down the houses of Richard Tooth, Roger Davy and others, and the aforesaid John confessed that he was voluntarily and without coercion with the aforesaid society for two days, against the king's peace. Also they say that John Trame of Southery, John Bryce of the same, John Pepir of Littleport, John Walmere of Hilgay and John Pope of the same along with others unknown with force and arms and against the king's peace on Monday 17th June 1381 at the time of the uprising and rumour came to West Dereham and there feloniously broke into a chamber of John de Methewold, and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels they found there worth £20 belonging to the said John de Methwolde, against the peace of the lord king. Also they say that John de Holt of Hilgay, Thomas Bernard junior of Littleport, Richard Ledere of the same, Thomas Breccham of the same together with other unknown wrongdoers with force and arms and against the lord king's peace, namely on Wednesday 19th June 1381 at the time of the uprising and rumour, came to Hilgay and took and carried away goods and chattels they found there worth 100 marks belonging to Nicholas de Massyngham and John Lucas, against the peace of the lord king. Also they say that John de Coventre of King's Lynn, bowyer, on Sunday 16th June 1381 at the time of the uprising and rumour sent a letter to Nicholas de Massyngham at Hilgay in order that he might send £10 in silver to the same John at the town of King's Lynn, or otherwise he would lead and send there a society of 200 men which had risen against the lord king's peace, to kill the same Nicholas and tear down and set fire to his houses, wherefore the aforesaid Nicholas in fear of his life and the devastation and destruction of his goods and chattels and his houses sent the certain £10 to the same John at the town of King's Lynn, the which £10 the aforesaid John took, against Nicholas's will and against the lord king's peace. Also they say that John Wright of Swaffham, carpenter, together with other unknown wrongdoers on Monday 17th June 1381 at the time of the uprising and rumour of the people with force and arms came to Rougham and there broke into the houses of John Reed and tore his houses down, and feloniously took the lead from the aforesaid houses and feloniously carried away that lead worth 100 s. against the peace of the lord king. Also they say that William son of William de Metfield of Brandon was a chief leader of the people against the king's peace, now recently rising up at Methwold on Sunday 16th June 1381, and there he broke into the houses of John, Duke of Lancaster, and feloniously burnt the rolls and muniments which he found there of the same duke, against the peace. Also they say that the aforesaid William son of William was a chief leader of the people raised [in rebellion] against the king's peace at Didlington on Monday 17th June 1381, and the same William along with other wrongdoers associated with him threw down the houses of Richard de Holdych there, and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth 20 marks, against the king's peace. Also they say that the aforesaid William son of William was a chief leader of the people raised [in rebellion] against the king's peace at Bromehill on Monday 17th June 1381, and the same William along with other wrongdoers associated with him openly threatened the Prior of Bromehill, that if he would not give him £10, his houses would be thrown down and the Prior killed. And so by these threats, he took and carried away the said £10 from the said Prior, against the king's peace.
