Text (English translation)Town of East Dereham - Mitford The jurors present that John de Carlton came to Mattishall on Monday 17th June 1381 with others unknown and assaulted the life and limb of Richard, vicar of the church of Mattishall, and took from the same Richard 6 s. 8 d. Also they say that Thomas de Mounteney, Edmund de Southous and Richard de Southous came to Hoe on Wednesday 20th June 1381 on the request of Geoffrey Dedmore and threatened William Drake whereby out of fear the aforesaid William waived one messuage and 80 acres of land for the benefit of Geoffrey Dedmore. Also they say that a certain Martin Mannyngh, dwelling in Sudbury, sent letters on the aforesaid day and year to East Dereham by Robert Egge of Yaxham and John Brung senior of East Dereham to John de Longham, William Ibry and Rodoland Lucas of the same on behalf of John Wrawe, that they should restore a certain free tenement to the aforesaid Martin, the which letters are in that village [i.e. East Dereham]; those Robert and John confessed to have been where Thomas atte Ook was killed. Also they say that William Smyth, dwelling in East Dereham, and William Padinak went through the country and met with the great society, and were sworn by that society, that is that William Smyth went to the constables of Dereham, commanding them that they should deliver the prisoners from the gaol that they could be sworn [i.e. to the society], but nothing on this was done, and on the advice of the constables he desisted, and afterwards he was arrested by the lord's bailiffs for the aforesaid reason and is in the custody of the bailiffs of the hundred. Also they say that Hugo Bucher of Caister, John Milicent, farmer of Wicklewood, John Creyk of Wymondham and William Draper of Lyng were with the society in various places, taking away chattels from various people, and they acquired chattels by agreement. Also they say that Andrew, bailiff of the lord bishop of Ely at Brigham was a common wrongdoer in various places, and in the aforesaid society carrying away the chattels of various people, namely at Harling and Kempston, the goods of Thomas Clog, chaplain, and of various other men.
