Text (English translation)Thetford Inquisition held by Peter Goos and his associates, who are sworn and upon their oath present that Geoffrey, vicar of the church of All Saints, Sudbury, came with sixteen other unknown men to the town of Thetford on 14th June 1381 and made a certain proclamation and uprising of the people, and in fear of this proclamation, uprising and rumour of the people, Simon Barbour, then mayor of the town made a fine of 28 marks in money to save the town from having its houses burned, the which 28 marks [Geoffrey] took and carried away, to the prejudice of the king's crown, and he was a leader and common wrong-doer. They also present that William Metefeld junior of Brandon was a chief leader who with many others unknown broke into the house of John Strakour, and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £20 on 15th June in the above-mentioned year (1381). Also the same William Metefeld, chief leader, with the same unknown men, came to the manor of Methwold on 16th June in the aforementioned year (1381), and took and carried away sheep and other (goods and chattels) worth 20 s. Also the same William, with the aforesaid company, John Filipp and Roger Pepir on the aforesaid day and year came up to Bromehill and made threats to the Prior and Convent of the same village to burn their houses, until the same Prior paid them 6 marks, and so often he was warned that he promised, but the six marks are not yet paid. Also that William Metefeld senior received the goods and chattels of John Strakour for safe-keeping by the hand of William his son and of others unknown on the night of the aforesaid day, the which goods and chattels he voluntarily handed back the next day to the aforesaid John Strakour . Also they say that Osbert de Mundeford, on 15th June in the above-mentioned year (1381) was captured by John Geldere and others, who made him swear to be their leader against his will.
