Text (English translation)Hundred of Milton Inquisition held at Maidstone 4th July 1381 before [Thomas] Holand earl of Kent and the king's justices into various uprisings and assemblies against the king and his people, by oath of John Toghe, William Cosyn, John atte Meed, William Joce, William Bikke, Walter Eliot, Stephen Coket, Richard Ledesynge, Stephen Stoill, Richard Bakere, Ralph Bakere and Walter Bakere, who say on their oath that John Brayn of Upchurch on 10th June 1381 feloniously killed and beheaded John Tebbe at Canterbury with a gisarme. John Smyth of Tunstall junior on 10th June 1381 in the same way as the aforesaid John Brayn falsely killed John Tebbe at Canterbury striking him through the heart with his own baselard. William Kayly of Bobbing on 10th June 1381 with other wrongdoers gathered at and feloniously broke into the house of Simon Haye at Ospringe and and various goods of Simon and many other men elsewhere were plundered. John Glovere servant of Simon Glovere on 11th June 1381 at Tonford feloniously plundered six silver spoons worth 6 s. belonging to Thomas Fog, knight. Simon atte Forde, John Lovel and Thomas Whyte of Sittingbourne on 10th June 1381 feloniously broke into the house of John Sokelyng at Sittingbourne and came upon various goods, chattels and valuables worth £10 and with many other unknown wrongdoers plundered them, and they also broke into the houses of Thomas Garwynton and John Tebbe at Wells [in Ickham] and Canterbury on the same day. Nicholas Bredestrete and Bartholomew servant of Simon Aleyn on the same Tuesday feloniously plundered a strongbox of the aforesaid Thomas Fog at Tonford with various [...] gold and silver contained within. Nicholas Knowith of Middleton on 10th June 1381 feloniously broke into the house of the aforesaid John Sokelyng at Sittingbourne with other unknown wrongdoers. William Mathew lately servant of William atte Berghe of Rodmersham on 10th June 1381 feloniously broke into the houses of John Sokelyng, John Catesby, Simon Haye, John Tebbe and Thomas Garwynton and with many other men plundered goods and chattels. Michael Walde of Middleton and William Prentis of Newington on 10th June 1381 feloniously broke into the houses of John Sokelyng, John Catesby, Simon [Haye], John Tebbe and Thomas Garwynton, and afterwards procured and abetted the killing of the archbishop of Canterbury and Robert Hales prior of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem in England. John Prest of Sheppey, William Retherwyk, Thomas Elis of Ernemouth and Walter Lansle on 14th June 1381 feloniously broke into the house of Nicholas Heryng in the manor of Reyham on the Isle of Sheppey and feloniously stole all goods and chattels of the said Nicholas, to the cost of £100. John Date, cobbler, on 10th June 1381 feloniously broke into the houses of John Sokelynge, Simon Haye, John Tebbe, Henry Somenour and Thomas Garwynton at Ospringe, Wells, Canterbury, Sittingbourne, and Boughton under Blean with other wrongdoers. Walter Compton of Rochester was a willing abettor and procurer and one of those who caused the killing of John Godwot at Borden, and on 11th June 1381 feloniously took 13 s. 4 d. from Joan wife of the aforesaid John on the pretext of ransom. When Arnold Savage recently went to London to petition the king for support and remedy to the revolt and rebellion, a certain John Cock of (Lower) Halstow, a supporter of the said insurrection, openly threatened the aforesaid Arnold with mutilation of his members and the burning of his house. John Brayn of Upchurch on 10th June 1381 feloniously killed John Godwot at Borden. John Brayn, John Smyth, William Kailly, John Glovere, Simon atte Forde, John Lovel, Thomas Whyte of Sittingbourne, Nicholas de Bredestrete, Bartholomew servant of Simon Aleyn, Nicholas Knowith, William Mathew, Michael Walde, William Prentis, John Prest, William Retherwyk [...] de Ernemouth, Walter Lansle, John Date, cobbler and Walter Compton made insurrection along with other wrongdoers against the king's peace and to the terror of the king's people.
