Text (English translation)Hundred of Maidstone Inquisition held at Maidstone before Thomas Holand earl of Kent, Thomas Trevet and John Middiltone, king's justices assigned to guard the king's peace, on 4th July 1381, by John Hardyng, Walter Capel, Thomas Benteflour, Thomas Capel, John Cote, John Pende, Thomas Parker, Walter Hardyng, John Clyve, Richard Pykyng clerk, Thomas Smyth and John Davy, jurors, who say upon their oath that Robert Senyng and Simon Bolle of Linton, along with other unknown transgressors, rose up against the king's peace and his people, and went to the house of John Mayster of Loddington in the parish of Maidstone on the 20th June 1381, and assaulted and him and threatened to destroy his house unless he gave them 14 acres of land in Linton called 'la Skaurie'. Because of their threats the said John gave up his own houses for one week to great loss. And afterwards the said Robert and Simon the next day removed the said John from seisin of the said land against the peace and to the great loss of the said John. They say that William Meryham of Goudhurst went to Loose on the 26th June 1381 and wished to cut off the head of Thomas Smyth of Loose against the peace unless the said Thomas made a fine with the said William of 13s 4d which he paid to the said William. They say that Gilbert Teghelere of Hunton harassed Thomas Capel, Walter Capel, John Holden, John Coveneye, Richard Cod and many others falsely and against the peace to their great loss. In this case, etc.
