| Text (English translation) | Essex. John Hosye and John Fullere of Toppesfield, defendants, attached to answer William Heyward of Stock, plaintiff, on a plea that they assaulted William at Sturmer, beat, wounded and ill treated him and threatened him with death and the mutilation of his members until the same William made a fine with the said John and John of five marks to save his life. And the said William complains by Thomas Ewell his attorney that the said John and John on 13 June 1381 assaulted William at Sturmer with force and arms viz. swords, bows and arrows and beat wounded and ill treated him and threatened him with death and the mutilation of his members until William made a fine of five marks with John and John to save his life. Robert Pulter of Witham attached to answer John Ewell on a plea that, together with John atte Wode of Coggeshall, John Coteman of Coggeshall, John Pakkard of Coggeshall, John Bovyndon of Hatfield, John Kyng of Hatfield, John Coggeshale tailor, John Herde and John Elmestede junior, with force and arms he assaulted John Ewell at Coggeshall and beat wounded and ill-treated him to the grave damage of John Ewell himself and against the peace of the King. And the said John Ewell in person pleads to the said Robert together etc. on 10 June 1381 with force and arms, namely with swords, bows and arrows assaulted John Ewell at Coggeshall and beat, wounded and ill treated him and other enormities so that he suffered damage to the value of twenty pounds. The said Robert appears by his attorney Thomas Petworth and says he is not guilty and places himself on the country. Ewell likewise. Sheriff ordered to summon a jury for the quindene of Trinity 1382. The same John Ewell also appears against the said John atte Wode John Coteman John Pakkard John Bovyndon John Kyng John Coggeshale John Herde and John Elmestede. Sheriff ordered to arrest them. |
