Ralph atte Croft incites rebellion at North Lambeth
Ralph atte Croft, on Friday 15 June 1381, was the first to rouse the people at North Lambeth in the aforesaid county to rise up against the lord king and his peace. And that a certain Thomas Taillour came spontaneously and purely of his own free will to the same Ralph there; which Ralph and Thomas rose up there in the aforesaid form with many unknown people of their faction.
William Senare and William Pontere of Battersea treacherously and feloniously seized and burnt the custumal and other muniments and documentary evidence of the said lord king's belonging to the aforesaid manor of Kennington, in the keeping of the bailiff of the said manor and found there, through the power, aid and assistance of Ralph atte Croft and Thomas Taillour. And they say that the aforesaid Simon [Gerard], John [Haukes], William Brangwayn, Roger [Norman], Richard [Lorthoun], Thomas Rolf, Walter [Lorchon], Walter [Percok], Bartholomew [Carpenter] and John [Waryn] were forced by the said Ralph and Thomas Taillour to come there, and were there more to save the said custumal, muniments and documentary evidence, and to save the life of the said bailiff of the same manor than to do any evil there, as appeared at the time through their will etc.
