List of names of those forced to pay sums by force and duress to Richard de Middilton, lately alderman of Beverley, Henry de Newerk and Thomas White, tiler, lately chamberlains of Beverley, Richard Bostan and other rebels who are now fled to Westminster, by good men of the same town. Item the aforesaid burgesses and others paid 100 marks to the aforesaid Middilton, Newerk, White, Bostan and others for the king's marriage and 24 marks as costs whereof none was paid to the king.
Petition from Adam Coppendale and Thomas de Beverley concerning disturbances in the town of Beverley
The petitioners request remedy, stating that during the recent troubles various rioters took by force the common seal of the town and forced them to make various bonds against their will. They also replaced the usual governance of the town, by 12 men elected annually on St Mark's day, with an alderman and two chamberlains, although there have been no such officials in Beverley for 50 years except Manby and Ryse, who were deposed for their bad governance.
