Incident

Id3734
Short DescriptionPetition from Cambridge University complaining of injustices committed by the burgesses of the town in the rising
DetailsThe petitioners seek restoration of their liberties and privileges in the town and suburbs of Cambridge as those granted to the university of Oxford, since the university cannot be sustained without liberties and privileges to the scholars. They show that lately the burgesses and commonality of the town during this great trouble in the realm have shown the university great malice and hatred, and assembled in great routs and attacked and damaged the chests and the treasury of the university. They also burned all the charters and muniments from the king and his predecessors for the aforesaid liberties and privileges etc. They also compelled all the scholars to remit their liberties and enter into bonds for great sums always to have the order and governance of the mayor, bailiffs and burgesses of the town on pain of their lives. They attacked the colleges and the houses of the scholars with the intent of destroying the university.
