Text (English translation)m. 6 d. Previous case continued: of the king's writ as necessary sent to him just as at present he is able to ascertain. And therefore nothing further has been done on this at the time of the writ. And the same John Haukyn and all those indicted above are summoned with due process and do not appear. Thus it is ordered to the sheriff that writs of exigent and capias be issued against them from county to county and they are to be outlawed unless they can be seized. And they should appear in court before the aforesaid assigned at Cambridge on Wednesday 9th January 1382 to respond to the king separately on the charges. And the sheriff has a writ of exigent. On which day the sheriff is ordered to carry out the same, as is set down in roll 9. The inquisition also says that John Peper of Linton on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June 1381 at the time of the rumour, with others unknown, feloniously broke into the close of Edward Walsingham at Great Eversden and pulled down his houses. And that the same John Peper on the same Saturday with others feloniously unknown pulled down the houses of Thomas Haseldon at Steeple Morden. And the same John for these felonies and others has been outlawed, as is set down in roll 3, therefore no further action is taken. And the same inquisition says that Robert Randesson of West Wratting on Saturday 15th June 1381, with others unknown, burnt the court rolls of the Priory of Ely at West Wratting. And that Robert Howell and Richard Howell of Balsham on the same Saturday broke into the close of the Bishop of Ely at Balsham and feloniously burnt his court rolls and other muniments found there. And on this matter it is ordered to the sheriff to arrest them, and that they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381 to answer separately to the king on the charges. On which day the aforesaid Robert, Robert and Richard came before the justices and rendered themselves up. And on this Roger Radewynter, Thomas Smyth of Balsham, Richard Fuller of the same and Simon Maisant stood surety for them to be in court, always prepared to stand lawfully before the justices until a lawful means has been decided upon. And this, whichever of them body for body, under penalty of £100, namely to the king under the aforesaid condition. Chesterton. Another inquisition taken says that John Wolleman, John Hosier and John Hogges were instigators in raising the community on Monday 17th June 1381, and rode to Cottenham, Great Eversden and elsewhere in the county, committing various felonies and seditions, to the prejudice of the crown and oppression of the people. And by the same inquisition it is testified that all the aforesaid felons are beheaded in the county of Huntingdonshire for insurrection there, and therefore no further action against them has been taken, but it is ordered to the sheriff to arrest them. And another inquisition taken at Cambridge says that on the same Sunday, John Scot of Milton came with other men, whose names are unknown, to Lolworth, to the house of John Sigar, and threatened Mabel his wife, saying that he would pull down the houses of the said John Sigar, unless he granted to Roger atte Cherche and other men full seisin of certain lands in Girton, Howes and Madingley. And [Scot] has been arrested, and brought before the sheriff, and questioned as to how he wishes to answer to the charges. And he says that he is not guilty, and places himself upon his country. And the jury aforesaid are adjourned until the justices have another mandate from the king on which to make a decision. And on this Henry Scot, Thomas Scot, Bartholomew Knyth and Thomas Wylot stood surety for him to be in court from day to day until a lawful means has been decided upon. And this, whichever of them body for body, under penalty of £100 paid to the king under the aforesaid condition. Jury of Cambridge. The Cambridge jury say upon their oath that John Est, William Hynton, John Derabought and Ralph his servant, Thomas Baxster, William Lokyere, Thomas Stowe, Robert Flecchere, Richard Martyn, John Tyteshale their leader, John Gryndere, Thomas Furbisshour, Simon Hosiere, John Russel, Thomas Lystere, John his son and John de Dene, porter, along with other wrongdoers rose up against all the liege subjects and the king's peace, in the town of Cambridge on Sunday 16th June 1381, regarding all acts committed against the Prior of Barnwell, and they coerced the mayor, namely Edward Remodwe, to make a proclamation against the Prior of Barnwell, against the laws and customs of the kingdom of England. And that during the whole time of the insurrection after the said day, they were aiders and abettors in continuing the insurrection to the prejudice of the king. The sheriff is ordered to arrest them. The jury of the hundred of Papworth and Stowe present that John Cole of Waterbeach was, along with others, an insurrector of the people at Milton, who attacked the tenements of Roger de Harlaston there on Sunday 16th June 1381 at the time of the rumour. And he was arrested on the aforesaid occasion by the sheriff and remained in custody until [3rd] August 1381. On which day John Coles is led before the aforesaid justices at Cambridge by the sheriff, and asked how he wished to answer to the charges, and he said that he was not guilty, and placed himself upon his country. And on this [a jury] was arrayed by the sheriff from the region of Milton, namely twelve who came, elected and tried, as necessary for the king, and he did not appear. And the aforesaid jury say upon their oath that he is not guilty of the charges, and nor did he withdraw himself on the aforesaid occasion, therefore he should go acquitted. And pledges come for his good behaviour regarding the king and people: Robert Bunte, Robert Wade, John Harvey of Chesterton, John Wendon. And he is sworn.
