Text (English translation) | m. 4 Pleas held at Royston on Saturday 6th July 1381 before the aforesaid assigned justices. Hundreds of Armingford and Stow Longa Twelve jurors say that William Vicory of Linton and John Webbe of Papworth were felons associated with John Hanchach the chief leader, and John Peper. And that on Saturday 15th June 1381 they were ringleaders in the overthrowing of the buildings of Thomas Haselden, and the selling of his goods and chattels. And they made a public proclamation fomenting oppression and treason, namely on seven occasions or more, in prejudice of the king. And be it known that the said William Vicory gave himself up to prison for these felonies, and remains in the custody of the Sheriff. And that the said John Webb with other felons on the same day, at the manor of Thomas Haselden in Steeple Morden, threatened various faithful men of life and limb, because they would not aid in the pulling down of the houses and buildings of the said Thomas, and in committing other felonies there, and this of his own free will. And that the same John Webb sold there a bushel of peas belonging to Haselden, for 60 s., and for which he took 12 d. in part payment from Thomas North in the presence of John Martyn of Litlington, and Thomas Birton, and other trustworthy men, who come before the justices, and being sworn and diligently examined upon the charges, witness openly that these things are so. And the said John Webb had been arrested by John Dengayn, soldier, and William de Notton as a suspect. And on this matter the aforesaid John appears and is questioned on the charges, which he denies. Thus by the judgement of the aforesaid justices he is beheaded. And the escheator is ordered to inquire into the lands, tenements, goods and chattels of the aforesaid John and seize them into the hand of the king, and return this clearly and openly. (Beheaded, forfeit). Armingford. The jury say that William atte Ree of Steeple Morden and William Shepherde servant of Geoffrey Cobbe, together with others unknown, and with John Cook of Barton, leader of felons, and John Prat servant of Geoffery Cobbe, on Monday 17th June 1381, with force and arms feloniously broke into the close of John Walter at Croydon, and seized and carried away his goods and chattels to the value of 40 s. And that the same John Prat assaulted the wife of the said John Walter, and seized the keys of his chamber, and entered it; and that he is a common malefactor. And that the said William atte Ree organised the aforesaid wrongdoers and others to burn the buildings of the said John Walter, but they were not burnt. And on this matter the aforesaid William atte Ree and William Shepherde were arrested, and William atte Ree is committed to the king's prison under custody of the sheriff until the arrival of the justices, concerning certain causes. And the aforesaid William Shephirde is questioned as to how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid felonies, and he says that he is not guilty, and places himself upon his country. And immediately a jury is formed and assembled by the sheriff who, elected tried and sworn, say upon their oath that the aforesaid William is not guilty of the charges of which he is accused. Thus by the judgement of the justices he is acquitted. And it is testified that the aforesaid William is of good reputation and character and he does not withdraw himself. And pledges come for his future good behaviour: Robert Tuyllyet, William Fychion, William Hovesdon, and William Margrete. And William himself is sworn to the peace. And the aforesaid John Prat has not been arrested and does not appear. Therefore it was ordered to the sheriff to arrest him, and that he should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Monday 22nd July 1381. On which day the sheriff returns that he was not found in his jurisdiction. Thus as before he should arrest him and he is to appear at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381 to respond to the charges. And after, namely on the aforesaid Monday at Cambridge the aforesaid William atte Ree appeared before the justices, led by the sheriff. And similarly twelve jurors of the view [of frankpledge] of Croydon assembled by the sheriff, [elected, tried] and sworn say upon their oath that the aforesaid William atte Ree is not guilty, and he is acquitted. And pledges come for his good conduct: William Fychyon, Thomas North, John Eldefeld and Walter Rous. And he is sworn to the peace. The aforesaid jury say that Robert Wrythte of Baldock feloniously overthrew the houses of Thomas Haselden at Guilden Morden and elsewhere, and seized and sold his goods and chattels to the value of 100 s., namely on Saturday 15th June 1381. Also they say that Geoffrey Cobbe with other unknown persons subject to him, feloniously and like traitors entered the manor of Thomas Haselden at Guilden Morden and Steeple Morden, namely on Saturday 15th June 1381, and proclaimed publicly, pretending that they had a commission from the king for doing many evil deeds, when they had no such thing. And they sold there 155 quarters of grain, 6 quarters 7 bushels of peas and 5 quarters 2 bushels of barley and oats belonging to the said Thomas. And the sheriff was ordered to arrest them, and they should appear before the justices on Saturday 3rd August 1381 to answer to the king on the aforesaid felonies. On which day the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Robert and Geoffrey were not to be found in his jurisdiction. Therefore it was ordered to the sheriff as before that they should be arrested. The jury also say that Thomas Godemar of Royston, and John Poonde of Therfield [Herts], on Monday 17th June 1381 came to Royston and feloniously broke into the close of Sir Roger, chaplain, and seized and carried away his goods and chattels to the value of 100 s. And that they also feloniously seized goods and chattels belonging to Warin Martyn of Royston worth 40 s., and broke the mill of the same Waryn. And that the said Thomas and John joined the evil society of their own volition and without coercion [the remainder of the membrane is damaged]. They also say that John Jankyn of Fowlmere, on Sunday after [date missing] threatened Nicholas Roberd of Whaddon with the burning of his house unless he joined the insurgents. And they say that William Vicory of Linton and John Peper of the same were with [John Hanchach] of their own free will during the time that he was leader of the felons who attacked the manors of Thomas de Haselden, Thomas Bradefeld, William Bateman and the Prior of St. John of Jerusalem at Shingay, on Saturday 15th June 1381, and feloniously plundered them and broke into, destroyed, and burnt their houses. And that the said William Vicory and John Peper continued such robberies during the two following days. And it is known that the same William Vicory is already in prison for the above felonies, but the aforesaid Geoffrey Cobb, John Prat his servant, Robert Wryghte of Baldok, Thomas Gademar of Royston, John Pound of Therfield, John Jankyn of Fowlmere and John Peper of Linton indicted above in the same way do not appear. Thus it is ordered to the sheriff to arrest them, and they are to appear before the justices on Saturday 3rd August 1381. [On which day they do not appear, having fled after the felonies were committed]. |
