Text (English translation) | Smithdon Inquisition held at East Rudham on Monday 15th July 1381 by oath of Simon Roberdesson, Thomas Burgeys, Henry Baylye of Brancaster, John de Walpool, Robert Rust of Shernborne, Richard Aleynesson, John Smyth of Holme, Henry Smyth of Brettenham, Nicholas de Chosele, Geoffrey Reyner, John de Stone, William de Dockynge, who say upon their oath that Robert Fletcher (beheaded), dwelling in Hunstanton, came with others unknown up to Heacham with bows and arrows and other arms, and incited the men of Heacham to rise up in this rumour against the king's peace, speaking ill of our venerable Father Lord Henry, Bishop of Norwich, and that he [i.e. the bishop] rode through the country punishing wrongdoers, in a bad example to the whole of the community of the land, namely on Monday just passed (8th July 1381). And that John Spanye of King's Lynn, cordwainer, on Monday 17th June 1381 at the time of the rumour, was a chief leader and supporter of wrongdoers rising up in the country, and he came up to Snettisham with force and arms with thirty unknown men, and incited men of that village to rise up against the king's peace, looking for men of Flanders in order to kill and behead them, and he threatened to kill Ralph Panton so that the same Ralph, despairing of life and limb, paid 10 s. as a pledge to a certain servant of the said John, against the king's peace and law. And that Roger Loksmyth, dwelling in Snettisham, on Tuesday 18th June 1381, was a chief wrongdoer and supporter of wrongdoers at the time of the rumour, and assaulted Simon Wylymot at Snettisham with force and arms, and wounded him in the shoulder with a dagger, asking from the same Simon 15 quarters and 4 bushels of malt and threatening him that if he would not give him the said malt he would lead a certain band of wrongdoers to the said Simon's home to plunder the said Simon's goods and chattels, so that the said Simon, despairing of his life, handed over the said malt. And that on Tuesday 18th June 1381 at the time of the rumour a certain Thomas Kenman, dwelling in Holme-next-the-Sea, incited, procured and assembled various men of the country to sail with him in a certain boat to detain Edmund Gurnay and John de Holkham, sailing on the sea, and they pursued them to detain them as far as Holm lock, so that the same Edmund and John, despairing of life and limb, fled by night, saving their lives. Also they say that John son of William Rychond of (East) Walton on Saturday 15th June 1381 at (Burnham) Deepdale made certain general proclamations against the crown of our Lord King, namely, that anyone who was able to seize Edmund Gurnay and John de Holkham would have 20 s. as a reward, and he had feloniously plundered 20 s. in cash of William Dauntre, servant of the said Edmund, saying that the aforesaid Edmund and John were traitors to the king's people and common pillagers etc. |
