Text (English translation)Wayland - Grimshoe John Megge and his associate jurors present that John de Sutton of Tottington, carpenter, was a chief leader of the people against the king's peace, recently rising in rebellion at Tottington on Sunday 16th June 1381, at the time of the uprising and the rumour; together with Thomas le Parker of Winfarthing, Richard Slaghtere and John his son and many other unknown wrongdoers they came with force and arms to the church of Tottington and made open threats to John, the vicar of the aforesaid church, and said that they would kill and behead the same vicar unless he would give them 40 s. And because of these threats the aforesaid vicar gave up the aforesaid 40 s. to John de Sutton and the others named above, and the aforesaid John de Sutton, Thomas, Richard and John son of Richard feloniously took it and carried it away. They also say that the aforesaid John de Sutton, Thomas le Parker, Richard Slaghtere and John his son on the abovementioned day and year came to Tottington and there pursued Robert Davy and Thomas atte Brigge in order to kill and behead them, against the king's peace. Also they say that William son of William de Metfield was a chief leader of the people against the king's peace, rising in rebellion on the aforesaid day and year together with other unknown wrongdoers at Didlington , Langford and Weeting to tear down the houses of Richard de Holdych, John de Methewold and John Stracour and to destroy and carrying away their goods and chattels to the value of 100 s., against the king's peace. Also they say that John Kentynge, chaplain, on Monday 17th June 1381, along with other unknown wrongdoers at the time of the uprising and rumour, came to Letton before the society raised against the king's peace, and he raised a hue and cry against William de Thelnetham and called him a traitor, and thus he wished to kill the same William, against the king's peace, and thus the aforesaid William by the grace of God evaded the hands of the aforesaid wrongdoers, but at no point dared to approach his house until a fine of two cows worth 20 s. was made with the aforesaid John Kentyng, against the king's peace. Also they say that Thomas Smyth of Letton on Wednesday 19th June 1381 at the time of the rising came with force and arms to Watton and made open threats to Richard de Multon, Master of the Hospital of St John at Carbrooke, for a certain debt the same Thomas incurred arrears, and if he is not willing to give back to the same Thomas this debt he would lead a certain society to the same Master's houses and to destroy them and throw them down. And because of these threats Richard de Rislee and Thomas atte Chambre made a fine of 20 marks with the aforesaid Thomas in the name of the Master. Also they say that John Stokeman of Cranwich, along with other unknown wrongdoers, on Monday 17th June 1381 came to Didlington and there feloniously stole 300 sheep worth 20 marks from Richard de Holdych. And he is a common thief. Also they say that Richard Shepherd of Foulden, along with other unknown wrongdoers, at the time of the uprising and rumour on Monday 17th June 1381, came to Foulden and there feloniously stole 200 sheep worth £10 from Richard de Holdych. And he is a common wrongdoer and troublemaker. Also they say that John Skynnere of Feltwell together with other unknown wrongdoers, at the time of the uprising and rumour on Sunday 16th June 1381 came to Feltwell and openly threatened the life and limb of John Myles, and in fear of these threats the aforesaid John Myles made a fine of 20 s. with the aforesaid John Skynnere, or otherwise John Skynnere would have killed and beheaded John Myles, the which 20 s. the aforesaid John Skynnere feloniously took and carried away, against the king's peace.
