Text (English translation) | [These] are the grievances done to the good people of the town of Beverley in the time of the rising ... by Richard de Bos[tan Henry] Newerk 'suthman' Thomas White tiler and other troublemakers and rebels against our lord the King against the peace ... destruction of the Kingdom. William Coppendale was expelled from his house and privy, price one hundred pounds, by the said troublemakers to the number of four hundred ... lead iron and stones taken and carried away Tuesday in the week of Pentecost in the fourth year of the reign of your present king [4 June 1381]. The said adversaries of our Lord the King sent to Beverley by ... d'Osuik to make ... that house and that ... made the proclamation ... imprisoned for six days by Piers de Santok troublemaker and rebel of the same town in contempt of our Lord the King which Adam ... to remain in his house he made various obligations to each of the rebels and ... said troublemakers six pounds ... and against his will. Thomas de Beverley and Jonette his wife lying sick in his bed and all the household were forced out of the house and put in the high road by the said rebels and others to the number of 500 on the Friday after the feast of Corpus Christi in the said year [14 June 1381] and their misdeeds. [Thomas's house] was sealed and remained sealed until Thomas made an obligation of four hundred pounds under duress to the said troublemakers ... and he was assessed to pay one hundred and twenty pounds. William Dudhill and Agnes his wife ... know their children ... one whole ... household by the said troublemakers and others of their company through their misprision[forced] out [of their house] and notwithstanding that Agnes was great with child were put in the street on the Monday after the feast of Corpus Christi in the said year [17 June 1381] the said William taken and imprisoned and his houses sealed by the troublemakers who numbered about four hundred and remained sealed until the said William gave to the said rebels an obligation of one hundred marks taken by fear of death and burning of his houses of which he was assessed to pay twenty pounds. [This entry is crossed through] The tannery of John Gervays with two louvres priced at twenty marks, his grocer's shop his rooms and other business premises were sealed up by the said troublemakers to the number of four hundred on the Monday before the feast of Pentecost in the aforesaid year [27 May 1381] and continued sealed for which the said John had pardoned the said men and the great part of the other goods left in that place and the said John was taken and imprisoned until he made an obligation of one hundred marks of which he was assessed to pay twenty pounds by force and against his will. John de Ergham made an obligation to the said troublemakers for one hundred marks against his will on Friday in the week of Pentecost in the said year [7 June 1381] to be adjudged by them and paid twenty shillings to them and Margaret his wife [paid] two marks against her will because the said John said that he was a liege man to our Lord the King and were forcibly pushed out and excluded from their houses by the said rebels and could not approach the said houses in the time of uprising at Beverley and dare not approach the said town for fear of death or grievous imprisonment. Paul de Rutby had a protection of our Lord the King and was sent to Beverley by Nicholas Drake sergeant of arms of our said Lord the King for three weeks following the feast of St Michael last past was taken and imprisoned by Piers de Santon and other troublemakers and rebels of our Lord the King and punished with stocks and irons and remained in this punishment for five days until Paul gave as pledges Thomas Yoke and Robert de Cottingham together with John Wytelle that they would pay the said rebels twenty pounds and that they would never pursue these grievances ... the said Paul paid the said troublemakers ten pounds. John de Rigdon butcher was taken and imprisoned and placed grievously in irons by the said troublemakers on the Feast of Trinity in the said year [9 June 1381] and remained in prison for six ... and made an obligation of one hundred marks on condition of paying the said rebels twenty pounds and also that he would never bring any manner of action in his own name or that of the king so that the said John paid them twenty pounds by force of arms and against his will. Walter Walthef and Beatrice his wife and all their household were put out of both their houses which were sealed and lost their brewery and other victuals to the value of one hundred shillings. The said Walter was twice imprisoned by Piers de Santon and other rebels and remained in prison until he had made a ransom of twenty shillings. John de Karleton the younger and the said Walter made an obligation of four hundred marks against their will to be adjudged and determined by the said rebels and of this they were assessed to pay twenty five pounds and then took from them ten marks and one horse price one hundred marks. Adam Tundu was taken and imprisoned on the Monday in the week of Pentecost in the year [3 June 1381] by Piers de Santon and John Baker his servant and other rebels and remained in prison until he made a fine with them of twenty shillings. His wife his children and all his household were thrown out of his mansion and the doors and windows were sealed until he made an obligation of forty marks to pay one hundred shillings of which he paid 13s 4d. John de Karleton the younger was taken and imprisoned by Piers de Sant[on] and other rebels on Thursday after the feast of St John ante Portam Latinam in the fourth year of the present King [9 May 1381] and ransomed for twenty shillings paid to the said Piers and made an obligation of two hundred marks against his will and John with Walter Wauthes was obliged to be judged by the rebels so that he was assessed to pay twenty pounds of which he paid seven pounds. Stephen Coppendale was taken and imprisoned on the feast of Corpus Christi in the said year [13 June 1381], Jonette the wife of the said Stephen their children and all their household were forced out of their house by three hundred rebels and ransomed by the said troublemakers for thirteen shillings and fourpence, the doors of their houses sealed until he made an obligation of one hundred marks against his will to be adjudged by them so he was assessed to pay ten pounds of which he paid ten marks. Thomas Gervase, his wife, children and all his household was forced out of their house and the doors of the said house were sealed for five [days] by the said troublemakers whereby the said Thomas lost his wines and a large part of his other victuals. The said Thomas was taken and imprisoned on the eve of the feast of the Ascension in the said year [22 May 1381] and remained in prison until he made an obligation of ... by the said troublemakers of which he was assessed to pay twenty marks of which he paid thirteen marks. |
