Text (English translation) | Northamptonshire John Seynper, having been captured, on account that he, on Friday next after the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary in the third year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, feloniously broke the prison of the castle of the lord king of Northampton and the aforesaid castle of the lord king. And also on account that he, before the feast of Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, came at Brampton by Harlestone in the aforesaid county and elsewhere within the said county, saying and affirming that he is a merchant of wools by the name of John Philypote of London, knight, by colour of the purchase of the aforesaid wools, he incited and procured diverse men of the aforesaid county to surge and rise up against the lord king and his peace and allegiance, whereof he is indicted before the keepers of the peace of the aforesaid county. He came, having been brought by the keeper of the gaol, and having been addressed by the justices, he [said] as to how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid felony and treason. He says that he is not guilty thereof in any way. And as to this, for good and for bad, he puts himself upon the country. Therefore, the jury then came. The jurors, having been elected, tried and sworn to this, and before the rendering of their verdict, allege that he is a clerk. And upon this the same John, having been examined by [blank], ordinary of the aforesaid peace, reads as a clerk. And the aforesaid jurors say upon their oath that the aforesaid John is guilty of both the breaking of the aforesaid prison and also of the aforesaid incitement and procurement in the form, as he is indicted above. The jurors, having been asked as to if any men rose up by incitement of the aforesaid John Seynper or not, say not. And because the justices are not yet advised as to whether the same John ought to be drawn and hung in this matter, or whether he will be delivered to the aforesaid ordinary as a convicted clerk. Therefore, the same John is sent back to prison in the custody of William de Murers, constable, etc, until the next delivery, none of his chattels, etc. |
