Text (English translation)Indictments held at Alton on the Monday on the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest, before John de Montagu, Laurence Dreu and their companions, the lord king's justices appointed to hear and determine various treasons, felonies, trespasses and other crimes perpetrated in the county of Southampton. Hampshire Twelve jurors, namely Richard atte Crouche, Henry atte Faune, William Potard, John Selvere, Edward Chepman, John Clerk of Worldham, Henry Froyll, John Spore, Nicholas Astiler, John atte Thorne, Edward Horsman and William Wolwane, say on their oath that William Wygge and others, on the Tuesday before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fourth year of the present lord king's reign, began an insurrection in the city of Winchester, and feloniously killed Walter Hogyn there, and feloniously and treacherously broke into the lord king's staple there, and seized and carried off the lord king's rolls and records found there, and are the principal insurgents and traitors etc. Hampshire The inquisition held before the aforesaid justices at Winchester on the Tuesday following the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest, on the oath of Hugh Cran, William Inge, Richard le Frye, Mark le Fayre, Robert Mayhu, John Haywode senior, John Mourton, Walter Holeweye, Simon Taillour, William Rous, Richard Bempthe and Robert atte Rok, jurors; who say on their oath that, whereas there are many murmurings, uprisings, and uproars in various parts of the realm, a certain Thomas Faukener came for this reason into the city of Winchester on the Monday before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fourth year of the present lord king's reign, with the false plan and purpose that the commons of the same city should rise up. He said to many people gathered there that there was a great company at Guildford, who were coming towards the aforesaid city, and that he was of the same company and the messenger of the same, sent to the commons of the said city to convince them that they should rise up; and if any of them should wish to travel to Guildford to make a complaint to the aforesaid company, he would obtain all he wished for in everything. Because of this speech and plan the aforesaid Thomas, together with many others of the said city, namely Henry Clerk, Walter atte Brugge, John Fyssh, Gilbert Forster, Jordan Fuller, William Morene, John Bette and Geoffrey Talbot, without the knowledge of the mayor and the principal citizens of the same city, having made a false conspiracy and plot among themselves, rode from Winchester to Farnham on the same day, with the same intention of making the commons of the said city rise up. And there they held meetings and discussions, and planned the said insurrection. And afterwards they returned to Winchester, and suggested to them that all of them would be drawn and hanged unless they rose up. Whereupon they rose up and treacherously rang the common bell and sounded the common horn of the aforesaid city, to the prejudice of the lord king and his crown. Whereupon those aforesaid people thus assembled together with others named below rose up, and began and continued the said insurrection and disturbance of the people for the two following days, raising their banner in a warlike manner; but they say that the said John Bette did not take part in any disturbance or anything in returning to Winchester. Item, they say that William Wygge and the others met at Farnham, coming from London to Winchester on the Monday before the said feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, and there they came to an agreement with the aforesaid Henry Clerk and the others aforesaid, and plotted the aforesaid insurrection among themselves; and afterwards, travelling to Hampage, they took an oath to one another and planned the aforesaid insurrection. And from there they proceeded to Winchester and acted in all things as has been said above. Hampshire The inquisition held at Winchester on the Tuesday following the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest, before the aforesaid justices etc., on the oath of Thomas de Hampton, Richard Tistede, John Chamflour, Thomas Canteshangre, Richard Edeneye, John Piperwhit, John Bernard, Thomas Kenne, John Payn, Henry Holte, John Tank and John Rigge; who say on their oath that William Wygge and others, on the Tuesday before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fourth year of the present lord king's reign, rose up in the city of Winchester, broke into the lord king's staple, seized and carried off the muniments found there, and burnt them in the High Street, and also feloniously killed Walter Hogyn; and that they are the principal insurgents, and common disturbers of the peace, and the lord king's traitors. Hampshire The inquisition held at Winchester on the Wednesday following the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest, before the aforesaid justices by the oath of Thomas Lecford, Alan Sampson, John Emery, John Danel, John Power, John Iryssh, William Bonenger, John Beek, Thomas Bluet, Henry Smyth, Thomas Coleman and John Mourghard; who say on their oath that William Wygge and others, on the Wednesday before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fourth year of the present king's reign, treacherously rose up in the town of Romsey against the lord king and his people, and travelled with a great company and did many evil things in contempt of the lord king, his crown and dignity; and that they are the principal insurgents and the lord king's common traitors etc. [Order to forward the indictments] Richard by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful sheriff Laurence Dreu, greetings. Whereas in our parliament lately held at Westminster, the name of William Wigge was shown among the names of certain persons which were shown in the same parliament by the community of our realm of England so that they might be excepted from all grace and pardon for certain insurrections and treasons committed by the same persons, rebels of the same realm, against their faith and allegiance, and the same William was afterwards captured for that reason and handed over before us to our prison of the Marshalsea, and remains in the same, and we have now understood that the same William is indicted of such insurgencies and treasons before you and your companions, lately appointed to chastise and punish such rebels and insurgents in the county of Southampton, and we, wishing to be informed about that indictment, if there was one, as fully and wholly as it was held before you and your aforesaid companions, before we proceed to the delivery of the same William on this matter, order you to send all indictments touching the aforesaid William Wigge, if there were any, with everything touching on them, before us under your seal at the octave of the Purification of the Blessed Mary wherever we then are in England, clearly and openly, and this writ, so that we may further do on this what seems to us to be rightly to be done. Witness Robert Tresilian at Westminster, the tenth day of October in the tenth year of our reign. Brudenell. [On dorse] By virtue of this writ I send you the indictments mentioned in this writ, sewn to the present letters according to the form of this writ. The answer of Laurence Dreu.
