Text (English translation)Suffolk Nicholas Cook of Bedingfield was attached to answer to Edmund Lakyngheth in a plea of why he, together with Robert Brokeford, Robert Priour of Mendlesham, John Cutte, Robert Dunche, Robert Parker of Mendlesham, John Godewyn, John Grygge, Richard Fissh, Richard Poneys, John Grene, Gilbert Kluene, John Rynger, John Smyth of Mendham, Robert Cokerell, John Brabbon, William Fysk, Thomas Prum, John Seman, William Cobbe, Thomas Roo of Fordham, William Alrerd, John Corbald, Roger Cheseman of Horham, Edmund Gerveys and John Rus of Sudbury, brewer, broke into the same Edmund Lakyngheth's close and houses at Gislingham, Herringswell, Eriswell, Lakenheath, and Stoke [Ash] near Eye with force and arms, and seized and drove off twenty horses, forty oxen, forty cows and a thousand sheep belonging to him found there, worth a hundred pounds, and seized and carried off other goods and chattels of his found there, to a value of a hundred marks, and burnt his charters, deed and other muniments found there. He also made so many threats of death and mutilation of his limbs to the aforesaid Edmund Lakynghethe, and pursued him so fervently and violently to seize and kill him, that the same Edmund Lakynghethe, because of his fear of death, fled into a certain ship then at sea, where he was immediately captured by the king's enemies of France, and put to a great redemption, and other outrages etc., to his great harm etc. and against the peace etc. And on this the same Edmund Lakynghethe, by Roger Bagge his attorney, makes complaint that the aforesaid Nicholas Cook together etc., on the Sunday following the feast of Corpus Christi in the fifth year of the present king's reign, broke into the same Edmund Lakynghethe's close and houses at Gislingham, Herringswell, Eriswell, Lakenheath and Stoke [Ash] near Eye with force and arms, namely with swords, lances, sticks, axes, bows and arrows etc., and seized and drove off twenty horses, forty oxen, forty cows, and a thousand sheep of his found there, worth a hundred pounds, and seized and carried off his goods and chattels found there, namely linen and woollen cloth, silverware, silver spoons, three hundred wool fleeces, and a cask full of wine, to the value of a hundred marks, and burnt charters, deeds - namely the charters and deeds by which the same Edmund Lakynghethe acquired the manor called Hemnales in Gislingham - and other muniments - one bond by which Robert Brokeford was bound to the same Edmund for a hundred marks, and another bond by which Richard de Bassyngbourne, knight, was bound to John Scot for fifty pounds at Gislingham - [found] there, and he made such threats to the aforesaid Edmund Lakynghethe of death and of the mutilation of his limbs, and he so fervently pursued him to seize and kill him [. . .] he was immediately captured by the king's enemies, namely by the admiral of France, and held to a great ransom, namely to five hundred marks, and other outrages etc. to his great harm etc., and against the present king's peace etc.; concerning which he says that he is injured and has damages to the value of a thousand pounds. And on this he brings suit etc. And concerning this the same Nicholas Cook . . . appears and defends the force and injuries when etc. and whatever etc.; and he says that he is in no way guilty of the aforesaid trepasses. And on this he puts himself on the country. And the aforesaid Edmund Lakynghethe likewise. Therefore a jury is to appear on this before the lord king fifteen days after the day of the Holy Trinity wherever etc., and who do not etc., to investigate etc., because as much etc. The same day is given to the parties etc. Suffolk The same Edmund Lakynghethe appeared on the fourth day through his attorney against the aforesaid Robert Brokeford, Robert Priour of Mendlesham, John Cut, Robert Dunch, Robert Parkere of Mendlesham, John Godewyn, John Grygge, Richard Fissh, Richard Poneys, John Grene, Gilbert Kluene, John Rynger, John Smuth of Mendham, Robert Cokerell, John Brabbon, William Fysk, Thomas Prum, John Seman, William Cobbe and Thomas Roo of Fordham, in a plea of why with force and arms they broke into the same Edmund Lakyngheth's close and houses at Gislingham, Herringswell, Eriswell, Lakenheath and Stoke [Ash] near Eye, and seized and drove off twenty horses, forty oxen, forty cows and a thousand sheep of his found there, worth a hundred pounds, and seized and carried off other goods and chattels of his to a value of a hundred marks found there, and burnt his charters, deeds and other muniments found there; and also made such threats of death and the mutilation of his limbs to the aforesaid Edmund Lakynghethe, and pursued him to seize and kill him so fervently and violently that the same Edmund Lakynghethe fled through fear of death into a certain ship then at sea, where he was immediately captured by the king's enemies of France and put to a great redemption, and other outrages etc., to his great harm etc., and against the present king's peace etc. And they did not appear. And the sheriff was ordered, as often before, to seize them. And the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Robert Brokeford and others are not found, nor do they have anything etc. by which etc. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to have them put in exigent from county court to county court until etc. they are outlawed if they do not etc. And if etc., then he is to seize them and safely etc. so that he has their bodies before the lord king fifteen days after Michaelmas day wherever etc. And concerning this the sheriff in three Easter [? Easter term, ? the morrow of Easter] etc. On which day the sheriff did not send a writ. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to have them put in exigent again, from county court to county court until etc. they are outlawed if [they do] not etc. And if etc., then he is to seize them and [keep] them safely etc., and to have their bodies before the lord king, fifteen days after the day of St John the Baptist, wherever etc.
