Text (English translation) | [Recorda file 7 Ric. II]. Richard, etc, to Robert Tresilian and his fellow justices, assigned to hold pleas before us, greetings. We are sending to you the tenors of certain indictments, made before our beloved and faithful Hugh la Zouche and his fellows, lately assigned to inquire into certain treasons, felonies, trespasses and other wrongdoings, done and perpetrated against our peace both to us and also to the beloved to us in Christ the prior of Barnwell at Barnwell, whereof John Barbour, taverner, and certain others are indicted before us, sent at our mandate into our Chancery, under the foot of our seal, commanding that, these having been seen, you cause to be done thereupon further what lawfully, etc [4 Feb 7 Ric. II]. The tenor of the indictments about the names of those, below written, lately taken before Hugh la Zouche and his fellows, whereof [mention] is made in the writ, attached to this schedule ... Inquisition taken at Barnwell on Thursday next before the feast of St Lawrence in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, before Hugh la Zouche, Roger Harleston and John Brume, assigned with Richard Lescrope, knight, to inquire by the oath of Boneface Chastelet, William Hithron, John Hert, Nicholas Aungre, John Pouwer, Bartholomew Knyth, William Kneshale the elder, William Magote, John Hancock, Roger Clerk of Drayton, William ?Maupai and Robert ?Chambre. Who say upon their oath that John Barbour, tanner, John Trippelowe, Alice de Lynne, Henry Tanner, John Causton, Thomas Stowe, John Bokkyng and John Cumton and John Derabought, on Sunday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, took all the muniments of the prior of Barnwell at Barnwell by force and arms, and retained them in their hands until the eve of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, on which day they were delivered to the aforesaid prior by virtue of a writ of the lord king. And on Monday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the aforesaid year, at Barnwell, by force and arms, namely with swords and cudgels, axes, shovels and ... and mattocks, they broke into the close of the prior at Barnwell there, and unjustly and without judgment disseised the same prior of one garden, containing by estimation four acres, with one ditch, containing 14 feet in width between Grenecroft and the said garden, whereof the lord prior and his ancestors had been seised from the time of the foundation of the house of the prior of Barnwell. And they cut down 200 trees and more, lately growing in the said garden, and broke one water-gate and two houses there, and carried away the said trees and timber from the said water-gate, worth £300 ... ... ... worth £20, found there. And they took and carried away in fishponds there the fish of the prior and eels and pikes there, worth 20 marks, and they inflicted other outrages on him, to the serious damage of the same prior beyond the aforesaid chattels of the said prior of 200 marks. And all the aforenamed wrongdoers, on Wednesday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the aforesaid year, at Barnwell, by force and arms, namely with swords and cudgels, entered the aforesaid priory there and threatened the prior and convent with their lives and members, in such a way that the said prior and convent released to the mayor and burgesses of the town of Cambridge ... ... by deed under their common seal by compulsion of the said mayor and burgesses. And all the said wrongdoers forced the said prior and convent to be released to the mayor and burgesses of the town of Cambridge, and to every person of the same under their common seal for the entry of the close of the same prior and convent ... to be obliged to the aforesaid mayor ... with £2,000 of silver under seal. |
