Text (English translation)The jurors present that Philip Shakell of the county of Southampton, on Friday next after the feast of Corpus Christi, in the [fourth] year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest of England, came to the manor of Clerkenwell and to the manor of the Savoy with a multitude of other traitors, and feloniously and traitorously burnt down the aforesaid manors against the peace of the now lord king, and that he is a common robber. Item, they present that Theobald Elys of the county of Kent, on Thursday in the feast of Corpus Christi and on the Friday then next following, was one of the principal men, with a multitude of other traitors, who made an insurrection against the lord king in the county of Middlesex, and that the same Theobald was the one who first assented and advised in the county of Middlesex to behead Simon, archbishop of Canterbury, then chancellor of the lord king, and similarly they afterwards feloniously and traitorously beheaded the prior of St John of Jerusalem in England on the abovesaid day and year. And also that the same Theobald, on the abovesaid day and year, was one of the principal men, who feloniously and traitorously burnt down the manor of the Savoy and the house of St John of Jerusalem in England as an enemy of the lord king, and that he is a common robber. Item, they present that Richard Mony of the county of Essex, late servant of the prior of St John of Jerusalem in England, John Webbe, servant and palfrey-man of the said prior, and Thomas Notman, on [Thursday] in the feast of Corpus Christi in the abovesaid year, came to the manor of Highbury in the county of Middlesex and to the manor of Clerkenwell with a great multitude of insurgents, and feloniously and traitorously burnt down the aforesaid houses there. And afterwards they went to Tower Hill and there were present, aiding, procuring and helping to kill the aforesaid prior, then treasurer of the lord king, and against the peace of the lord king and his people. Item, they present that Thomas Ivere, parson of the church of Hendon in the county of Middlesex, on Tuesday next after the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest of England, by force and arms, came to a certain place of Ralph de Walton called Clytherous at Hendon in the county of Middlesex, and cut down and carried away 15 oaks, lately growing there, against the peace of the now lord king, etc. Item, they present that the aforesaid Thomas, on Thursday next after the feast of St Lawrence in the 50th year of the reign of lord Edward, late king of England, grandfather of the now lord king, at Hendon, feloniously raped Margaret, wife of the same Ralph, and took and led away her with the goods and chattels of the same Ralph, viz linen and woollen cloths, silver spoons, gold and silver rings and other jewels to the value of £10, found there, and still detains them with him against the peace of the now lord king. Item, they present that Thomas Clerk of Aldgate Street, butcher, and John Norman of Hammersmith in the county of Middlesex, on Thursday on the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of the now king, came to the manor of Clerkenwell and to the manor of the Savoy in the county of Middlesex with a great multitude of insurgents, and feloniously and traitorously burnt down the aforesaid houses against the peace of the lord king, etc. Item, they present that Robert Gardiner of the county of Middlesex, on Thursday in the feast of Corpus Christi in the abovesaid year, came to the house of Clerkenwell with other wrongdoers, and there beheaded seven men feloniously and traitorously, and also took one chalice at Clerkenwell to the value of seven shillings feloniously and traitorously and against the peace of the lord king, etc, and that he is a common robber. Item, they present that John Smart of 'Lilleston', John Newe of 'Lilleston' in the county of Middlesex, and John Prior of Streatham, Nicholas Potter of Cheam and Richard Shepherd of the county of Surrey, on Thursday in the feast of Corpus Christi in the abovesaid year, came to the houses of John Boterwyk at 'Eye' and Knightsbridge, together with other traitors, feloniously and traitorously burnt down the aforesaid houses as enemies of the lord king, etc. Item, they present that John Plot of London, brewer, on Thursday in the feast of Corpus Christi in the abovesaid year, came to the house of Roger Leget in Holborn feloniously and traitorously, and to the house of Andrew Brewere, and to the manor of the Savoy and to the manor of Clerkenwell, together with other wrongdoers, and feloniously and traitorously burnt down the aforesaid manors and houses in the county of Middlesex against the peace of the now lord king. And that the aforesaid John was one of the principal men, who made an insurrection against the lord king in the county of Middlesex, and was the first, who consented to behead Robert de Hales, prior of St John of Jerusalem in England. Item, they present that John Man of Scarborough in the county of Yorkshire, on Thursday in the week of Pentecost in the fifth year of the reign of the now king, by force and arms, viz with swords, etc, made an assault upon William Marche of the county of Yorkshire at the parish of St Mary le Strand without the bar of the New Temple of London in the county of Middlesex, and beat, wounded and mistreated him there, and [inflicted] other outrages, etc, and lay in ambush to kill the same William against the peace, etc. Item, they present that Richard de Beverley of Beverley, Hammond Well, Thomas Manby, William Totyng, John Gervays, vintner, Thomas Cato, John de Ake, draper, Adam Barkere, Thomas Voele, John Wellyng, Adam Tunclowe, Thomas Maning, John Arwom, Richard Langstray of Beverley in the county of Yorkshire, and William Wystowe of London, tailor, on Wednesday next before the feast of Corpus Christi in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest of England, by force and arms, viz with swords, etc, made an assault upon John Preston of Beverley at the parish of St Mary le Strand in the county of Middlesex, and beat, wounded and mistreated him against the peace of the now lord king, etc. Item, they present that Geoffrey Hadham of London, spicer, on Thursday in the feast of Corpus [Christi] in the fourth year of the reign of the now king, came to the manor of the Savoy and to the manor of Clerkenwell with a multitude of traitors, and feloniously and traitorously burnt down the aforesaid manors, and that he is a common robber and disturber of the peace of the lord king.
