Text (English translation)Surrey: The lord king sent to his beloved and faithful William Walleworth his writ of close in these words: Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful William Walleworth, greetings. Whereas we lately, for certain causes, wishing to be made more certain about the tenors of all indictments, made before you and your fellows, late our justices, assigned to take and punish certain rebels, who lately made an insurrection against our peace and his allegiance in the county of Surrey, about certain treasons, felonies and other wrongdoings, whereof Simon Gerard of South Lambeth is indicted, as it was said, have commanded to you that you send those tenors into our said Chancery, which afterwards ... sent before you, and we, wishing to be made more certain about the aforesaid indictments as fully and entirely, as they were taken before you, command you that you send the aforesaid indictments with all things touching them under [your] seals clearly and openly, before us without delay, so that we may cause to be done further thereupon what we see should be done ... ..., then sending back this writ to us. Witnessed by Richard Tresilian at Westminster on the ... day of June in the fifth year of our reign. Indictments, mention of which is made in the aforesaid writ, follows in these words. Indictments taken at Kennington in the county of Surrey on the fourth day of July in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard II before William Walleworth, mayor of the city of London, and his fellow justices of the lord king, assigned to inquire, hear and determine about certain wrongdoers now newly insurging against the lord king, by letters patent of the same lord king, etc. The jurors of the view of Kennington, viz William Pelham, Thomas Tailour, Robert atte Welde, Stephen atte Gate, Thomas Charietour, Richard Lambourne, Stephen Puyent, William Kyng, Elias de Bruges, Nicholas Brode, Bartholomew Carpenter and William Taborer, present that Ralph atte Croft, on Friday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, was the first abettor against the peace of the lord king at North Lambeth in the county of Surrey, who made an insurrection with other wrongdoers, viz Simon Jerard and others, and came to the vill of Kennington, aforesaid, together with many other wrongdoers unknown. The aforesaid jurors also say that a certain Richard Lorchon of Lambeth, William Seuare and William Pontere of Battersea feloniously took and burnt the custumals and other muniments of the lord king, found in the custody of the bailiff of Kennington then and there, together with the force of the aforesaid Simon Jerard and the other wrongdoers, etc. Item, the aforesaid jurors say that the aforesaid Simon Jerard and a certain John Faukes, on Thursday on the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year, abovesaid, came at Clapham in the county of Surrey, aforesaid, and took there from Peter Bronde two shillings and from Robert, parson of the church of Clapham, twelve pence against their will, and they thereupon feloniously robbed them. By the records of the fifth year. Afterwards, namely on Wednesday next after the feast of St John the Baptist, before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid Simon Jerard, having been brought by the sheriffs of London, by pretext of a certain writ of the lord king directed to them, who is committed to the marshal. And having been immediately brought by the marshal, he came and spoke as to how he wished to acquit himself of the aforesaid felonies and treasons, he says that he is in not thereupon guilty of anything, and thereupon he puts himself upon the country for good and for bad. Therefore the jurors are to thereupon come before the lord in the octave of St Michael, wheresoever, etc, and who, etc, to give judgement, etc. And the aforesaid Simon Jerard in the meantime is committed to the marshal, etc.
