Text (English translation) | Middlesex: The jurors of diverse hundreds of the aforesaid county at another time, namely in the term of St Michael in the fifth year of the reign of the now king of England, before the lord king at Westminster, presented that John Ferrour of Rochester in the county of Kent came with a great company of insurgent wrongdoers of Kent, as if the principal actors and leaders, on the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the now king at the Savoy in the county of Middlesex, and burnt down the said manor as enemies of the king, and took a certain chest, in which there were £1,000 of sterling of John, duke of Lancaster, and more there, and placed and took away the said chest in a certain small ship upon the Thames, and brought it to Southwark and there divided the said gold among themselves. And on the morrow the said John and the others came to the house of St John of Jerusalem in England and placed a fire there, and fully burnt down the said house, and they loaded and carried away two horses there with wool, worth six marks. And that the same John and the others came to the Tower of London, as if the principal leaders, and first of all thrust violent hands upon Simon, late archbishop of Canterbury, and brother Robert Hales, late prior of St John of Jerusalem in England, and dragged them out of the Tower of London and ordered them to be beheaded, viz on Friday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the abovesaid year, and made the aforesaid insurrections, burnings and felonies feloniously and traitorously on the said aforesaid day and year, etc. By which the sheriff was ordered that he should take him, if, etc. And now, namely on Thursday next after the quindene of St John the Baptist in this same term before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid [John], having been brought by the sheriff of London by writ of the lord king, to be committed to the marshal. And immediately, having been brought by the marshal, he came and spoke as to how he wished to acquit himself of the aforesaid felonies and treasons, made in the said county of Middlesex, as it is said, saying that he is in no way guilty thereof, and he thereupon put himself upon the country for good and for bad. Therefore, the jurors thereupon came before the lord king in the octave of St Michael, wheresoever, etc, and who, etc, to give judgement, etc. And the aforesaid John Ferrour in the meantime is committed to the marshal. Afterwards the process was thereupon continued before the lord king against the aforesaid John Ferour until the morrow of All Souls in the seventh year of the reign of the now king of England. At which day before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid John Ferour in the custody of the marshal. And similarly, the jurors came. Who, having been elected, tried and sworn, say upon their oath that the aforesaid John Ferour is in no way guilty of the aforesaid felonies and treasons, whereof he is indicted in the said county of Middlesex, nor has he withdrawn himself by these occasions. Therefore, the same John Ferour, as regards the aforesaid felonies, whereof he is so indicted in the said county of Middlesex, is to go thereupon quit. And upon this, because the court wishes to be made more certain as to whether or not the aforesaid John Ferour is indicted of any felonies or treasons in the said city of London, an order is made to William de Walleworth, late mayor of the city of London, and his fellows, late justices of the lord king, assigned to hear and determine diverse felonies and treasons, perpetrated by certain rebels, who lately made an insurrection against the same king and his subjects contrary to their faith and allegiance due to the lord king and against the peace of the same king in the aforesaid city, that they should send all indictments, had before them howsoever concerning the same John Ferour, if there will be any, under their seals, clearly and openly, before the lord king without delay, etc, so that further, etc. And the aforesaid John Ferour, on account that he is one of those names, who was excepted from all grace in the Parliament of the lord king, lately held at Westminster in the octave of St Michael in the fifth year of his reign, as if one of the principal insurrectors and leaders, is committed to the marshal. Afterwards, namely on Wednesday on the feast of St Martin in the seventh year of the now king, abovesaid, the aforesaid William Walworth returned before the lord king here, as follows: I, William Walleworth, make known to you that there is not any indictment, had before me, in any way concerning John Ferrour, nor was the same John in any way indicted before me and my fellow justices of the lord king, as is supposed within. Therefore, I cannot send any indictment of this kind before you. |
