Text (English translation)m. 7 d. Indictments above continued. Also they say that Thomas Forbour, Simon Hosier, John Russell, Henry Rande, John Apelton lately servant of Richard Ferour, Thomas Castre, cordwainer, William be Northe, Nicholas Heed, John de Fulburn, skinner, Richard Martyn, William Draper of Plott and Nuts Lane, John Deye of Willingham, John de Deen, William Garlekmongere, Robert Spenser, William Pardoner and Henry Taillour opposite the Friars Minor at Cambridge with others unknown were feloniously in the tenement of Roger Harlaston, and broke into his houses and plundered various goods, on the aforesaid Sunday at the time of the rumour. And be it known that of the aforesaid persons indicted, Mathew Jonyour, John Lycchfeld, Walter Paunfeld and Robert Spenser were arrested by the sheriff and remain in his custody, until their release by the aforesaid justices. And Nicholas Heed, one of those indicted aforesaid, afterwards was outlawed on the aforesaid occasion, and on 10th September 1381 came freely before the justices and gave himself up to stand lawfully. And on this he was bailed by John Bochere, Henry Smyth, Robert William and Henry Beffold from county to county, namely body for body and under penalty of £100, always prepared to stand lawfully before the justices until a lawful means has been decided upon. And the aforesaid indicted William Garlekmonger was arrested and remains in the custody of the sheriff until etc. (in prison). And be it known that of the aforesaid persons indicted Thomas Forbour, Simon Hosier, John Russell, Henry Rande, John Reffham, Robert Castere, John Appelton lately servant of Richard Ferour, John Fulburn, skinner, Richard Martyn, John Deye of Willingham and John de Deen have been outlawed lawfully for these crimes and others, as is set down in rolls 4 and 5. And the sheriff is ordered to arrest Thomas Stowe, cordwainer, Thomas Castre, cordwainer, William the Northe, Nicholas Heed, William Draper of Plott and Nuts Lane, William Pardoner, Henry Taillor opposite the Friars Minor, Robert Assheby of Haslingfield, butcher and John Scot of Stapleford, and that they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 3rd August 1381 to answer separately to the king on the charges. On which day the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Thomas Stowe, cordwainer, and all others named above were not found in his jurisdiction after their recovery was ordered. Thus the sheriff was ordered as before to arrest them, and that they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday 24th August 1381 to answer separately to the charges. And that in the meantime the same sheriff should inquire diligently into the lands and tenements and goods and chattels those indicted aforesaid hold jointly or severally, and seize them into the hand of the king, as was plainly certified at the previous term. On which Saturday the sheriff returns that the aforesaid Thomas Stowe, cordwainer, and all others named above were not found in his jurisdiction. Therefore in the inquiry into and seizing of their lands, tenements, goods and chattels as ordered above, it is returned that Ralph atte Wyk, king's escheator in the county of Cambridgeshire, before receiving the said order, had seized them as above, and this was counter-rolled by Simon de Burgh by the king's writ, as necessary sent to him just as at present he is able to ascertain. And nothing further has been done on this at the time of the writ. And the same Thomas Stowe and all others named above are summoned and do not appear. Thus it is ordered to the sheriff that writs of exigent and capias be issued against them from county to county and they are to be outlawed unless they can be seized. And they should appear in court before the aforesaid assigned at Cambridge on Wednesday 9th January 1382 to respond to the king on the charges. And the sheriff has a writ of exigent at this time. Also the jury of Cambridge say that Nicholas Badburham, cutler, and William Penreth along with others were rebels against the mayor and against the peace with others unknown, and were wrongdoers in town and country, namely Sunday 16th June 1381 at the time of the disturbance and insurrection. And the aforesaid Nicholas and William were arrested and led by the sheriff before the aforesaid justices on Saturday 3rd August 1381, and they were asked separately how they wished to answer to the charges, and they said that they were not guilty, and placed themselves upon their country. And on this a jury was formed from people within and outside the aforesaid district, arraigned by the sheriff, namely twelve who came elected, tried and sworn to this purpose. And a proclamation was made as necessary, and no-one came. And the aforesaid jurors said upon their oath that the aforesaid Nicholas Badburham and William Penreth were not guilty of the charges, and nor did they withdraw themselves on the aforesaid occasion. Therefore the justices decree that they should go acquitted. And pledges come for their good behaviour against the king and people: Geoffrey Coupere, John Lucas, John Badburham and William Coupere. And for William Penreth: Laurence Taillor, Simon Glovere, Adam Savage and William de Burton. And they are sworn to the peace. (Acquitted). An inquisition taken at Chesterton says amongst other things that John Hunte and others on Sunday 9th June 1381 at the time of the rumour at Cottenham sold various chattels belonging to Roger Harlaston, [including] oxen, sheep, pigs, wool, lead and timber of unknown value. And that on the same day Geoffery Lepere rode to the house of Edward Walsyngham and sold his chattels, value unknown. And that John Brus of Chesterton with others on the aforesaid Sunday at the time of the rumour at Cottenham sold a horse, two sheep and wool (value unknown) belonging to Roger Harlaston. And the aforesaid John Hunte, Geoffrey Lepere and John Brus were arrested and led before the justices by the sheriff on Saturday 3rd August 1381, and asked separately how they wished to respond to the charges, and they said that they were not guilty, and placed themselves on their country. And on this a jury was formed on behalf of the king arraigned by the sheriff from the neighbourhood of Cottenham and Great Eversden, namely twelve who came elected, tried and sworn to this purpose. And a proclamation was made as necessary, and no-one came. And the aforesaid jurors said upon their oath that the aforesaid John Hunte, Geoffrey Lepere and John Brus were not guilty of the charges, and nor did they withdraw themselves on the aforesaid occasion. Therefore the justices decree that they should go acquitted. And pledges come for their good behaviour: John Wendont, John Berle, draper, Robert Wade, John Harvey of Chesterton, Robert Bunte and Edmund William. And they were sworn to the peace. They say that Jacob Payn and Jacob Sodelcomb on Sunday 9th June 1381 at the time of the rumour at Cottenham seized 20 lb. blue wool of low quality, the value of which is unknown. And the sheriff is ordered to arrest them, and they should appear before the justices at Cambridge on Saturday [3rd August 1381] to answer to the king separately on the charges. On which day the aforesaid Jacob and Jacob delivered themselves up to the justices. And on this William Wykham, William Kynge, John Rede and Henry Barnard bailed them, ready to appear in court from day to day until a legitimate means has been decided upon, body for body under penalty of £100 paid to the king under the aforesaid condition. Also the aforesaid jury say that on the aforesaid Sunday at the time of the rumour say that Warin Roodland and others sold various chattels belonging to Roger Harlaston at Cottenham, namely sheep, oxen, pigs, wool, lead and timber, value unknown, and tore down his house with various men. And the same Warin appeared before the aforesaid justices on Saturday 3rd August 1381 and gave himself up to stand lawfully, and he remains in the custody of the sheriff. Also they say that Peter Thresshere and Ralph Motte on the same Sunday at the time of the rumour pulled down the houses of Robert Elteslee at Clayhithe, and cut down the timber growing there, the value of which is unknown. And the aforesaid Peter and Ralph delivered themselves up to the justices to stand lawfully on Saturday 24th August 1381. And on this Roger Radewynt, Thomas Smyth of Balsham, William Maupas and John Bayly of Fen Ditton bailed them, ready to appear in court from day to day until a legitimate means has been decided upon, body for body under penalty of £100 paid to the king under the aforesaid condition. More on these indictments in roll 8.
