Text (English translation)Inquisition of the hundred of Tendring at the town of St Osyth on Tuesday after the feast of the apostles Peter and Paul in the fifth year of king Richard the Second [2nd July 1381] before Thomas, earl of Buckingham and constable of England, and his associate justices of the lord king assigned to keep the peace in the county of Essex by oath of John Speneys, Roger Sagot, Thomas Broun, Richard Gest, John Burgh, John Wreight, Thomas Weylate, John Graunger, Robert Broun, John Forde, William Martyn, John Gulle who say upon their oath that Walter Plomer of Wix, John Plomer of the same, and Thomas Webbe of Great Oakley treasonably came on Saturday after the feast of Corpus Christi [15th June 1381] to the towns of Colchester, Manningtree and other places to assemble wicked people in order to kill and destroy John atte Frethe and many other people of the lord king. Also, the same jurors present that Roger Esthey did likewise on the same day [15th June 1381] in order to kill there Thomas Broun of Wix and many others etc. Also, the same jurors present that William Smyth of Coggeshall, Robert Sadeler of the same, Hugo Fuller of the same (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), John Turnour of Stisted, herd, John Wynterflood of Coggeshall, Robert Cardemakere of Bocking, Geoffrey Bromlie of the same, and John Rypoun, were the first inceptors and gatherers of people for their evil company and they made the people treasonably rising up at Bocking, Braintree, Stisted and Coggeshall in the county of Essex. Also, the same jurors present that William Scarlet of 'Brouneborough ' on Monday on the morrow of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the said year [10th June 1381] feloniously broke into the houses of John Sewale of Coggeshall at Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried off £20 of gold and silver of the said John found there. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Webbe of Great Oakley on the Sunday next after the feast of Holy Trinity in the said year [16th June 1381] voluntarily arose and caused other to rise up and came on the said day with a great mob of strangers to various places in the said hundred and took fines from John atte Frith and other various men and asked to take the heads of various of the best men of the hundred and is a common malefactor and still states that he wishes to do so etc. Also, the same jurors present that William Tracy arose in the same way and on the same day [16th June 1381] and behaved in the same way in everything and lastly he came to the Abbey of St Osyth on Thursday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the said year [13th June 1381] and there took Nicholas Davenaunt captive and treasonably led him to his death at Brentwood, and on the same day he feloniously took a horse belonging to the said Nicholas there worth 20s. and he feloniously took away the said horse etc. Also, the same jurors present that William Smyth of Harwich on the same day made threats against John Beneyt and divers other people at the time of the said rumour. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Hardyng of Manningtree was elected and appointed to be the procurator of the king and to enquire concerning the profits of the lord king in the county of Essex, and that he accepted various great rewards to the damage of the profits of the lord king, namely, on the Thursday after the feast of St Bartholomew the Apostle [30th August 1380] from John Payn of Mistley two cows worth 20s. and divers corn worth 20s. and from divers other people of the locality, and that he is a common extortioner etc. Also, the same jurors present that John Snel a stranger came to the town of St Osyth at the time of the said rumour and rang the bell, and this he did voluntarily for the aforementioned people of the locality. They also present that William Laweney of Great Oakley on the Sunday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the said year [16th June 1381] came to the manor of John Plays, knight, at Oakley aforesaid and there he treasonably dismantled and carried way the complete apparatus of a clock worth 6s. 8d. Also, the same jurors present that Walter Oxenhey of Elmstead (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) was the gatherer of an evil company and he incited them to do evil things. Also, the same jurors present that John Baroun of Little Oakley threatened to kill lord Richard de Sutton knight unless he carried out his will concerning various matters. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Hunte of Langham and John Brasier of the same on Monday before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the said year [17th June 1381] treasonably took a fine of 20 s. from the chaplain of Edmund Brokesbourne. Also, the same jurors present that John Kyng dwelling with the Rector of Great Bromley on the same Monday [17th June 1381] treasonably threatened Sir Thomas Maundeville junior, knight, and various other men. Also, the same jurors present that John Glaunfile of the same village [Great Bromley] on the same Monday [17th June 1381] threatened the said Thomas Maundeville and others similarly. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Leyham of Little Bromley on the same day [17th June 1381] threatened Walter Godmanston in a similar way etc. Also, the same jurors present that Lewis Chapman and John Lowys of Colchester on Thursday after the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the said year [27th June 1381] treasonably threatened to kill the Abbot of Saint Osyth and other men, and this because of the death of John Preston. Also, the same jurors present that Woderove Mariner and William Paynot of Weeley (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Friday before the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul in the said year [28th June 1381] rode about to incite all the people of the hundred to rise up and treasonably harm and kill the people of the lord king. Also, the same jurors present that William Cartere of Great Clacton and Roger Vintsent of the same on the same day [28th June 1381] threatened divers people of the said hundred in the same way. Also, the same jurors present that John Lowy of Colchester on the same day [28th June 1381] threatened to kill John Rysby etc. Also, the same jurors present that John Esthey, dwelling with the Lady of Mose, and Roger Esthey on the same day [28th June 1381] threatened divers people of the hundred in a similar way. Also, the same jurors present that William Tracy came to the Abbey of St Osyth on Thursday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the said year [13th June 1381] and there took Nicholas Davenaunt captive and led him to his death at Brentwood, and on the same day at the town of St Osyth took a horse belonging to the said Nicholas worth 30 s. and another horse of the said Nicholas worth 6s. 8d. and feloniously took them away. Also, he took on the same day two saddles belonging to the said Nicholas worth 5s. and a bag of the said Nicholas worth 2s. and a tunic of the said Nicholas worth 6s. 8d. and a silver belt and a knife with silver fittings belonging to the said Nicholas worth 43s. 4d., and all these goods and chattels he feloniously took and carried away etc. Also, they present that a certain Edmund Heywode, cordwainer, on the same Thursday [13th June 1381] came with force and arms to the house of Adam Dyere of Saint Osyth and there unjustly made him make a fine of 2 marks and feloniously took from him there 13s. 4d. Also, he made John Facoun the vicar of the church of Little Holland make a fine with him of 5 marks on Monday on the morrow of the feast of the Holy Trinity [10th June 1381]. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Framelyngham threatened William Cokayn in this rumour because he refused to make a fine unjustly with him by which the said William was sent away from his own house and that his neighbours do not know if he survived or not etc. Also, the same jurors present that John Clercus, tailor, arose anew together with various strangers after the king 's peace had been proclaimed and urged his neighbours to rise and threatened them. He did this on the Friday after the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the said year [28th June 1381] and left the district with the same strangers etc. Also, the same jurors present that Richard Tassel boatwright (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) arose on the Monday next after the octave of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the said year [17th June 1381] and was the greatest messenger of the said malefactors and forced his neighbours to rise up and threatened them to do so etc. Also, the said jurors present that in the aforesaid year Thomas Hardyng of Manningtree took from William Chaumberlayn of the same 6s. 8d. by extortion, and that the same Thomas came by night to the field of Richard Moys in the village of Little Bentley on Thursday before the feast of Easter in the [fourth] year of the lord king [11th April 1381] and feloniously took and drove away 2 cows of the said Richard worth 20s., and that the said Thomas came with force and arms by night on Monday the feast of Pentecost in the fourth year of the present king [3rd June 1381] to the field of Gilbert Barre and there took 80 sheep belonging to the said Gilbert and drove them away and retained them in his possession until he received 13s. 4d. from the said Gilbert by extortion, and that the said Thomas took from Robert Piers in the second year of the present king (1378/79) 28s. by extortion and that he is a common extortionist of his neighbours and the whole locality, and that the said Thomas Hardyng on Thursday in the week of Pentecost in the fourth year of the present king [6th June 1381] said to his neighbours and threatened them with the burning of their houses by day and by night so that his neighbours were not able to sleep by day or night. And that the said Thomas had been a common extortionist and tormenter of his neighbours and the locality for the last 20 years to the damage of the lord king and the locality of £100 etc. Also, the same jurors present that John Preston of Hadleigh in the county of Suffolk held no lands in demesne or in fee on the day that he was convicted of treason, but they say that the same John Preston had on that day in the town of St Osyth goods and chattels to the value of 5 marks of silver which are in the hands of Joanna lately the wife of the said John Preston, namely 3 horses, 4 oxen, 30 sheep [...], woollen and linen cloth, and other goods and chattels to the value as above (which the Sheriff is ordered to seize).
