Text (English translation) | Great Yarmouth Inquisition held at Great Yarmouth on the 16th July 1381 before William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, and his associate king's justices, to inquire into those who recently rose up against the said king's peace, by virtue of the commission the said king has directed to the said Lord William and his associates, by oath of William Ive, William de Eccles, Robert Topcroft, Peter de Selby, John de Rikkynghale, Roger de Risten, [...] Riston, Thomas Birell, Simon Hastyng, Robert Davy, Thomas Dere and Ralph Mangchild, jurors, who say upon their oath that the said Roger Bak[oun], Geoffrey Lister, Thomas Sket, William Kibit, John Trunge, William Belsted and John Keek, leaders of various wrongdoers in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk against the king's peace, rose up [in rebellion] at the said Great Yarmouth with a great company against the said king's peace, and came on Tuesday 18th June 1381 with force and arms and in a warlike manner to Great Yarmouth and made an assault on the said royal town, and they wickedly forced the burgesses of the said town to hand over their royal charter of liberties, the which charter they at once in contempt of the lord king despoiled, cut and tore into two parts, and one part they sent to John Seynsbury, Robert Gernays, John Wraw, chaplain, William Lacy junior, Thomas ate [Tonne], Edmund Hemmyng, William Coupere and many others of Suffolk, and so all and singular aforesaid was done by the abetment, consent and support [of the said John] Seynesbury and Robert Gernays and their aforesaid associates. Also they say that the said Roger Bakoun, Geoffrey Listere and their aforesaid associates on Wednesday 19th June 1381 feloniously broke open the king's gaol in the said town of Great Yarmouth and dragged out the prisoners and beheaded them. Also they say that the aforesaid lord Roger Bakoun and Geoffrey Lyster and their aforesaid associates, with many other wrongdoers whose names are unknown, on the Tuesday in the aforesaid year at Great Yarmouth feloniously broke into and entered the houses of Hugo Fastolf and William Elys and there feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels of Hugo Fastolf, William Elys and John de Rollesby, and rolls and customs obligations of the lord king. Also they say that Edmund Hemmyng and Thomas atte Tonne, of their own authority, in a certain place called Kirkley Road in Lowestoft next to the port of Great Yarmouth, against the liberty of the aforesaid town and the maintenance of the king's rights, collected the customs according to the proclamation made by Roger Bacoun and Geoffrey Lister their aforesaid associates. In witness whereof the aforesaid jurors have placed their seals. Also they say that he aforesaid wrongdoers have and feloniously robbed from the houses of Hugo Fastolf goods and chattels worth 200 marks. Also goods belonging to William Elys worth £400. Names of the prisoners beheaded: Coppyn Seel of Zieriksee John Rosendale Copyn Isgange And John Cook of Coventry was feloniously released by the said Roger. |
