Text (English translation) | Hundreds of Gallow and Brothercross Inquisition held at East Rudham on Thursday 18th July 1381 before William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, and his associates, who present that Thomas Soppe of Burnham Market and John Bokelerman on Wednesday 19th June 1381 at the time of the recent uprising against the crown feloniously broke into the house of the Abbot of Dereham at Holkham and took and carried away a horse worth 20 s. and other goods and chattels worth 40 d. Also that Simon Sylk of Holkham seized the aforesaid Thomas Soppe and arrested and imprisoned him for the aforesaid reason (ie. the theft of the horse), and afterwards on 24th June 1381 he sent him to Geoffrey Lyster, chief leader and rebel, the next Monday, who pardoned him for the aforesaid felony and thus he got away [with it] etc. Also that John Richond of Walton , Thomas Soppe and John Tynkere at the aforesaid time feloniously stole goods and chattels in a bag worth £10 at Burnham on 17th June 1381 from Edmund Gurnay, and 20 s. from William Dantry there on the same day. Also that Thomas Kenman of Holme was a chief leader at the time of the aforesaid recent uprising pursued Edmund Gurnay and John Holkham along the sea coast to behead them against the king's peace on the aforesaid same following Tuesday and in the same year [i.e. 17th June 1381]. Also that John Skeppere of Swaffham and Stephen Waryn junior of the same on Sunday 16th June 1381, rebels of their own free will and out of pure malice, came to East Rudham and threatened the life and limb of Nicholas Maupas, Robert Sprot and Roger Raulyn and other common men unless they would swear to them and ride from village to village to raise the people. Also that Thorald Ostrych of East Rudham on the said Sunday (16th June 1381) did similarly, and afterwards stole a horse from Robert Sprot and went to the counties of Essex and Kent to the chief leaders of the rebels, and he is accused of this thing by honest men of this county . Also that John Clerke of Whissonsett on 17th June 1381 at the time of the recent uprising against the crown secretly stole a horse and other goods and chattels worth 60 s. from John Reed at Rougham, and threatened the life and limb of Adam de Byllyngford. Also that Adam Calwer, Edmund de Blofield, Robert Norman, Richard Smyth of Holkham on the same Monday in the recent uprising at Peterstone Priory stole 15 cows worth 100 s. from Robert Sprot. Also that John Spayne of King's Lynn, Thomas Paynot junior, Thomas Colyn, tailor, John Whetewonge, weaver, John Snaylwell, John Bokelerpleyer and [space] Pynchebeke, tailor, of King's Lynn at the aforesaid time on the same Monday (and) others stole the aforesaid cows from the aforesaid Adam Calwer and his associates, and that Simon Sylk received the said cows knowing they were stolen. Also that Simon Gosberkyrke, Thomas Skynnere of Hempton on the following Thursday (20th June 1381) and others unknown secretly stole by theft 9 pigs worth 18 s. from John Reed at Rougham. Also that Thomas Hamond, tailor, at the aforesaid time, stole a cart with iron wheels from John de Mille at Wighton, namely on Wednesday 19th June 1381. Also that Henry atte Thorne of Toftrees on the aforesaid Monday at the aforesaid time stole 5 quarters of malt worth 15 s. from Edmund Gurnay at West Lexham. Also that Thomas Skynnere of Hempton and Simon Gosberkyrke threatened the life and limb of John Stevene of Toftrees and took a fine of 15 s. namely on Thursday 20th June 1381. Also that John Betus, barker, of Wymondham was a chief leader at the aforesaid time and threatened the life and limb of John de Walterton, clerk, and took a fine from him of £20 on the aforesaid Wednesday (19th June 1381). Also that Stephen Cobeler of Sedgeford united himself with his associates in rising up, and they rose recently against the king and threatened the life and limb of Thomas de Segeford and others until they took a fine of 6 s. 8 d., namely on the said Wednesday. Also that Simon Lente of East Rudham, John Skynnere, John Brese, Henry Ayfole and Thomas Hamund junior in the recent rising against the crown (and) despoiled John Reed and broke into his houses at Rougham on the said Tuesday in the aforesaid year. Also that John Barkere of Guist, John Banyard and John Sprot of Guist threatened the life and limb of Adam Pope, clerk, receiver of the Duke of Lancaster, and took from each man in the village of Stibbard a fine of 40 s. in the recent uprising against the king's crown, namely on Tuesday 18th June 1381. Also that John Blofeld on Sunday 16th June 1381 rose up and united himself with his associates against the crown and threatened the life and limb of Nicholas Maupas, Robert Sprot and other men, and proclaimed to all that they should be prepared to rise up against the crown. Also that Robert atte Snales and William Pooryng of Ryston at Thetford on Tuesday 18th June 1381 procured John Wrawe, chief leader, in order to plunder Adam de Clyfton, knight, and thus threatened the said Adam until he paid a fine of 40 s. at Wenere (Denver in Clacklose hundred?), and furthermore despoiled goods and chattels worth £40 belonging to John Methwold at the Abbey of West Dereham, and furthermore made the commons of Hilgay rise up and assemble against the king. |
