Item dicunt quod Iohannes Pipere de Briston et Iohannes Shepherd de Sharyngton tempore levacionis et insurrecionis populi contra pacem domini Regis die et anno quarto supradictis apud Bathele et ibidem venerunt ad domum Simonis Warde et ad domos Alani atte Grene et alii diversis simul cum aliis malefactoribus et ipsis manifeste minati fuerunt quod nisi eis darent diversis denaris sumas Ipsos aliter interficent et decollarent et sic ceperunt summa ad valenciam dimidium marcas. Item dicunt quod Thomas Deye de Thornegge taillour ex mera voluntate et non coactus equitavit et ibit in societatem et congregacionem dicti Galfridi Listere in perturbacionem pacis die et anno quarto supradictis et in maximum affraiamacionem fidelium ligeorum domini Regis. Item dicunt quod Iohannes Listere de Bynham Iohannes Barkere de eadem et Robertus atte Moor de Bynham die veneris proxima ante festum Nativitatis Sancti Iohannis Baptiste anno quarto supradicto venerunt apud Thorpmarket ad predictum Galfridum Listere et societatem suam contra pacem et in preiudicum corone domini Regis levatam et ibidem posuerunt billas et fecerunt querelas suas per maliciam dicto Galfrido et sociis suis versus Willelmum personam ecclesie de Thirford et alios diversos ligeos domini Regis ut vindictam super eosdem haberent in maximum affraiamentum predicti Willelmi et multorum aliorum fidelium ligeosdomini Regis. Text (English translation) | Holt Inquisition held at Holt on Monday 15th July 1381 before William de Elmham and his associated king's justices etc, by Vincent de Bale, Roger atte Cros, Thomas Storm, Nicholas Steyard, Michael Ruddok, William Spoo, Ralph Erneys, Robert Godwyn, Robert Bydon, John atte Bowre, Richard Tobir and John Shey, jurors, who say upon their oath that John Holtman of Hempstead on Tuesday 18th June 1381 rode in the company of Geoffrey Listere, chief and leader of the people, against the king's peace and in prejudice of the crown, rising (in rebellion) at Great Yarmouth of his own free will and without coercion, and thereafter he rode in the aforesaid society to the manor of Gimingham and feloniously broke into the park of the Duke of Lancaster. Also, they say that John Pipere of Briston and John Shepherd of Sharrington, at the time of the uprising and insurrection of the people against the king's peace, on the aforesaid day and year at Bale, went to the house of Simon Warde and the houses of Alan atte Grene and other various men, along with other wrongdoers, and threatened them openly that unless they gave them various sums of money they would kill and behead them, and thus they took the sum of half a mark. Also, they say that Thomas Deye of Thornage, tailor, of his own free will and without coercion, rode and marched in the society and assembly of the said Geoffrey Listere in disturbance of the peace on the aforesaid day and the aforesaid fourth year, and the great disturbance of the faithful lieges of the king. Also, they say that John Listere of Binham, John Barkere of the same and Robert atte Moor of Binham on Friday 21st June 1381 went to Thorpe Market to the aforesaid Geoffrey Listere and his society, rising up against the peace and in prejudice of the king's crown, and there they placed bills and made their complaints, by the wickedness of the said Geoffrey and his associates, against William, parson of the church of Thursford, and other of the king's subjects, in order to have vengeance against them, to the highest disturbance of the aforesaid William and many other of the king's faithful subjects. Also, they say that the aforesaid John Listere, John Barkere and Robert atte Moor, on the Friday and the fourth year aforesaid, came to the aforesaid village of Thorpe Market to the aforesaid Geoffrey Listere and his associates and they obtained from him and requested from him help that he sends them a certain society to burn and consume by fire all rolls belonging to the Prior of Binham. |
