Text (English translation) | Hundred of Wangford The jurors present that Geoffrey Kyngesman of Beccles, Roger de Bradewell of Beccles, Robert Borhed of Beccles, Richard Fitele son of John Fitele of Beccles and Edmund Barbour, staying in Beccles, assembled together all the wrongdoers of Beccles, Barsham, Shipmeadow, Worlingham and North Cove ; Geoffrey Buk of Benacre and Thomas Dobbisson of Covehithe assembled together all the wrongdoers of Benacre and Northalis and made an uprising against the king's crown and his dignity at Beccles on Tuesday 18th June 1381, along with Robert Bonefelaa of Ellingham, Walter Wysk of Ellingham, Geoffrey Hardewyn, wright, of Barnby and Richard Galle of Barnby, along with other wrongdoers, and feloniously broke the gates, doors, windows and (broke into) the house of John Bronewyne of Ellingham, and took goods and chattels they found there, namely horses, cows, oxen, calves, sheep, little sheep and lambs and pans, linen and woolen cloths, brass pots and timber , and other of his goods and chattels worth £100 and feloniously and by theft and took them away and carried them off.. Also they present that the aforesaid Geoffrey Kyngesman, Roger de Bradewell, Robert Borhesd, Richard Fitelle, Edmund Barbour, Geoffrey Buk, Thomas Dobbisson, Robert Bonfelaa, Walter Wysk, Geoffrey Hardekyn, Richard Galle, Thomas Clublowe of Henstead, Thomas Carman of Sotterley, Thomas Dannard of Mutford, Seman Fyn, thresher, and other wrongdoers of the hundreds of Wangford, Blything, Mutford and Lothingland of the county of Suffolk and other wrongdoers of the county of Norfolk, on the aforesaid day and year feloniously broke into the house of William March of Sotterley at Sotterley, and feloniously and furtively took and carried away his doors and windows, horses, oxen, cows, rams, ewes calves and lambs, with other goods and chattels, and the king's money in his keeping as one of the collectors of the king's subsidy, they found there to the value of 40 marks. Also they present that Richard Fitele of Beccles on Wednesday 19th June 1381 at Beccles feloniously dragged Geoffrey de Southgate out of his house in the same village, along with Roger de Bradewell of Beccles and Edmund Barbour dwelling in Beccles, and Geoffrey himself, with the king's protection in his hand, was carried off to John Wrau, cleric, and other rebels, against the king's crown and dignity, up to the eastern end of the village of Beccles, and in that place the aforesaid Edmund feloniously decapitated Geoffrey. Also they present that Peter Bray of Billingford, Robert Clerk of Hinderclay, John Kynggeston of Denton, Peter Garveys of Mettingham, Walter Coseler of Mettingham (beheaded), Thomas Bocher of Stratton, Robert Gunnyld of Rickinghall, weaver, William Causton of Pylliston, Robert Collyng of Moulton, Edmund de Walsyngham, shoemaker, Simon Howard of Harleston and other wrongdoers of the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk feloniously entered the castle of Mettingham of John Plays, knight, Roger Boys, knight and their associate feoffees on Tuesday 18th June 1381, and came upon goods and chattels of the aforesaid feoffees, namely £40 in money, (and) silver and pewter vases and other goods and utensils, doors and windows torn out, beds and armour worth £1000, and feloniously took them and carried them away, and submerged in water and cut up charters, muniments, manorial extents and court rolls existing in the said castle. |
