Text (English translation) | Freebridge Inquisition held at Castle Rising on Friday 19th July 1381 by oath of John de Midelton, John Pynchon, Edward Ryvet, Richard Chappe, John Boteler, William Costyn, Adam Palmere, John Tanner, Robert atte Gaunold, John Fox, Edmund Thornekyn and William de Thorplond, who say upon their oath that William Geldere of Feltwell was a chief leader of wrongdoers in this rumour, and with many others unknown so incited, and they threatened Osbert de Mundesford and Benedict de Hocham to rise up with them against the king's peace on Monday 17th June 1381 at the time of the uprising and (the) rumour, and that the aforesaid Osbert and Benedict in fear of their imminent beheading and despoiling of their goods rode with them. And the aforesaid William and others aforesaid unknown despoiled John Reed at Rougham of all the goods and chattels they found there in his messuage, the which chattels were worth £10, and he broke the doors and windows of the aforesaid messuage, assuming to himself royal power in prejudice of king and his crown. And that John son of Eustace Cartere of Middleton came to Middleton with force and arms on Friday 21st June 1381 at the time of the rumour and threatened Robert Benet, vicar of the church of Middleton that they would lead 500 wrongdoers to his messuage to despoil and plunder his goods and chattels which could be found in the same messuage, so that the said Robert for fear of having his goods and chattels despoiled made a fine with the said John of 5 and a half marks, in prejudice of the king's laws, the which 5 and a half marks the said John took and carried away. Also that Hugo Bocher of Caston on Monday 17th June 1381 at the time of the rumour went with force and arms with others unknown up to Palgrave to the [sheep] pen of John de Pagrave and plundered 400 ewes of the same John, so that Peter Boteler, John's attorney following the said Hugo to recover the said sheep for the benefit of the said John, could not have them back unless he [John] made a fine of 5 s. with Hugo, which the said Hugo took and carried away. |
