Nicholas Badburham and William Penreth rebel against the mayor
Also the jury of Cambridge say that Nicholas Badburham, cutler, and William Penreth along with others were rebels against the mayor and against the peace with others unknown, and were wrongdoers in town and country, namely Sunday 16th June 1381 at the time of the disturbance and insurrection. And the aforesaid Nicholas and William were arrested and led by the sheriff before the aforesaid justices on Saturday 3rd August 1381, and they were asked separately how they wished to answer to the charges, and they said that they were not guilty, and placed themselves upon their country. And on this a jury was formed from people within and outside the aforesaid district, arraigned by the sheriff, namely twelve who came elected, tried and sworn to this purpose. And a proclamation was made as necessary, and no-one came. And the aforesaid jurors said upon their oath that the aforesaid Nicholas Badburham and William Penreth were not guilty of the charges, and nor did they withdraw themselves on the aforesaid occasion. Therefore the justices decree that they should go acquitted. And pledges come for their good behaviour against the king and people: Geoffrey Coupere, John Lucas, John Badburham and William Coupere. And for William Penreth: Laurence Taillor, Simon Glovere, Adam Savage and William de Burton. And they are sworn to the peace. (Acquitted).
