3579 | John Cole rises up at Milton and attacks the tenements of Roger de Harlaston | The jury of the hundred of Papworth and Stowe present that John Cole of Waterbeach was, along with others, an insurrector of the people at Milton, who attacked the tenements of Roger de Harlaston there on Sunday 16th June 1381 at the time of the rumour. And he was arrested on the aforesaid occasion by the sheriff and remained in custody until [3rd] August 1381. On which day John Coles is led before the aforesaid justices at Cambridge by the sheriff, and asked how he wished to answer to the charges, and he said that he was not guilty, and placed himself upon his country. And on this [a jury] was arrayed by the sheriff from the region of Milton, namely twelve who came, elected and tried, as necessary for the king, and he did not appear. And the aforesaid jury say upon their oath that he is not guilty of the charges, and nor did he withdraw himself on the aforesaid occasion, therefore he should go acquitted. And pledges come for his good behaviour regarding the king and people: Robert Bunte, Robert Wade, John Harvey of Chesterton, John Wendon. 3617 | Simon Bentilowe rises up against the Prior of Barnwell and coerces the mayor of Cambridge | It was also presented that Simon Bentilowe of Cambridge was a rebel and a leader of the evil company who coerced the mayor of Cambridge, Edmund Redmedwe, into making a proclamation against the Prior of Barnwell, and aided in the attack on the said Prior and his home at the time of the insurrection and disturbance, and oversaw many wrongdoings in the said town, perpetrated against his allegiance, in prejudice of the king and [...] office of the aforesaid mayor. He appears on 23rd July, pleads not guilty, and is acquitted.
