Text (English translation)Richard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey appears by John de Bretton his attorney against William Shortport of Ringmer John atte Forde John Touble John Oteway Nicholas Wynter James de Mousehale Richard Spayn Robert Wodeland Richard atte Gate Thomas parson of the church of St Michael Lewes John Bocher John Sprot William Englers William Tannere of Southover Stephen Burgulum John Page, 'squyer', John Carter Simon Wilmondesherst John Stelde John Spedition and William Mot of Herstmonceux on a plea that with force and arms they broke the castle close and houses of the said Earl at Lewes and broke into ten casks of wine found there worth one hundred pounds and drank the said wine and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there worth forty pounds and burnt rolls rentals memoranda and other muniments found there and inflicted other enormities to the grave damage of the said Earl and against the King's peace. The defendants do not come. The Sheriff returns that William Shortport John atte Forde and John Touble were distrained by goods and chattels worth four pennies and mainprised by Richard Reve John Kene Richard Ode and John Ode who are therefore in mercy. And as many times previously the Sheriff is ordered to distrain them to appear in the octave of St Michael. As for the others, the Sheriff sends that they are not found. Therefore as many times previously the Sheriff is ordered to arrest them to appear at the said term.
