Text (English translation)[Brook Walden] Court of the abbot held there on Monday next after the feast of All Saints 5 Richard II (54 November 1381) ... It is ordered to seize into the hands of the lord all lands and native tenements and also all lands which are held of the lord by the rod ('per virgam') and [to seize) all goods and chattels of the villeins. And report on the profits.
General InformationThe sequence of court rolls of the manor of Brook Walden (today Saffron Walden) restarts after a twelve year break in November 1381.The above order is consistent with other orders of confiscation of unfree tenements after (known) destructions of manorial records. However, there is no direct reference to the revolt. Some tenants of the manor share family names with know rebels from Walden (for example, John Rous, affeerer, and Andrew Rous, rebel).
