Text (English translation)Court held on Wednesday next after the feast of the exaltation of the cross, 5 Richard II (18 September 1381), after the abominable rising of the common people. ... Because the court rolls and the custumal of the bond tenants of the lord and the land his bond tenants held were burnt, so that a new remedy has to be set out. Therefore, it is ordered to seize into the hands of the lord all lands and tenements which is held of the lord in villeinage as forfeited until the lord by his council then dispose of etc. And afterwards all bond tenants and the tenants who hold bond land do fealty to the lord. And he demanded that in order to have their lands and tenements back they have to pay the lord a fine etc. to hold at the will of the lord for services and customs as previously owed etc. The lord by his special grace and for a fine as stated grants Walter Dolle, bond man, and his heirs 16 acres of land and 1/2 acre with three messuages and a close to hold at the will of the lord ... General InformationHorsham St Faith was an alien Benedictine priory belonging to the abbey of Conches (France). In 1381 the priory was in the king's hands because of the war with France, but prior Berengar Natas in June 1381 was confirmed as the king's keeper [CFR 1377-81, p. 261]
