Text (English translation)Frist court held on Tuesday next after the feast of St Peter Advincula 5 Richard II (6 August 1381) after the court rolls, custumals, rentals and the rolls of suit of court and other muniments of the said manor had been burnt by the tenants of lord and other common people when the common people of the county of Norfolk and other counties have risen against the peace of the king, and they did great damage etc. The jurors of Ripton Hall present that John Randolf, John Bloc junior, Thomas Rake, Robert Chapman, Simon Bettes. John Richardes, Robert Rake, Robert Barkere, William Adomes, Robert Adomes, Henry Haye, Yeth(?) Cade, Robert Taillour, Adam Peddere, Johns Dauwes, John Larke junior, John Clerk of Stratton, John Brid, Walter Huberd, William Haye, John Jomour, John Spanye [gap] entered the manor of Hevingham and took away, burnt and made to be burnt the court rolls and other muniments of the said manor during the time of the rising of the of the commons etc. And the said jurors have until the next court to present who else was at the said burning or not etc. Order to give notice to the whole homage to make a new custumal, a new rental, a new roll of the names of those who owe suit of court, a new extent and a new terrier until next court under pain of 100 s. etc. [Order repeated for the manor of Park Hall and for the manor of Cricot Hall] ... And notice is give to all tenants who took away court rolls to burn them to deliver to the lord at the next court those rolls in their custody which have not been burnt etc. under pain of 100s.
General InformationChief lord of the large manor of Hevingham was the bishop of Norwich, Henry Despenser. The sub-manor of Park Hall, Cricot Hall and Ripton Hall was held by William le Cat (cf. B. M.
