In testimony of which matter, to this inquisition, indented, the aforesaid jurors have affixed their seals. Dated the day, year and place, abovesaid. Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to the beloved to him John Rokel, his escheator in the county of Essex, greetings. William Frost and Katherine his wife have entreated us [that], although the aforesaid Katherine and Thomas Leedere of Great Burstead, late husband of the same Katherine, had held jointly to them and the heirs of the same Thomas certain lands and tenements with appurtenances in Burstead from the gift and feoffment of John Salpreest of Southminster, the same Katherine, on account that the aforesaid Thomas, her husband, who was convicted for certain treasons, whereof he was indicted by the name of Thomas Plommer of Billericay in Burstead, was removed from the aforesaid lands and tenements by our then escheator in the same county. We wish to order to be delivered to the same William and Katherine the aforesaid lands and tenements, to be held for the term of the life of the same Katherine, together with the issues thereupon received. We, wishing that there is done in this matter what is just, order you that by the oath of upright and lawful men from your bailiwick, by whom the truth of the matter can be better known, you diligently inquire more fully into the truth as to if the aforesaid Katherine had an estate for the term of her life in the aforesaid lands and tenements with the aforesaid Thomas her husband in the aforesaid form, or not, and if so, then if those lands and tenements are in our hands for that reason, and what and of what kind those lands and tenements are, and of what value per annum, and if the aforesaid Thomas Leedere of Great Burstead and Thomas Plommer of Billericay in Burstead, who was convicted of the aforesaid treasons, are one and the same person, as is aforesaid, and about all other circumstances concerning the premises. And you are to send without delay the inquisition, thereupon clearly and openly made, to us into our Chancery under your seal and the seals of the same men, by whom it will have been made, and this writ. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster on the 20th day of October in the 9th year of our reign. |
