Text (English translation)[Gynge Abbyss] General court held there on Monday next after the feast of St Lucas the evangelist, 9 Richard II (16 October 1385) ... John Warde, who was given until this court to show by what right and title he claimed to hold one toft and 2 acres of land called 'Gogelescroft', now comes and says that the evidences he had for the said land were burnt suddenly in a certain house of his. And he offers the lady a fine to have a record from the rolls of this court concerning that land. And because it is stated that the court rolls of this manor, in which were the evidences of that land, were burnt at the time of rumour of the people, therefore John Warde asks that the homage may inquire whether or not he has any right to those lands. Whereupon an inquest is taken by oath of Richard Paty, John Bret, Thomas Laverang, John Spencer, William Duwe, John Baker, John Peper, Thomas Mors, William Morkyn, John Reyson, John Bede and John Jurday, who say that the same John Warde has no right to those lands and toft, because a certain John Wasket who was a bastard died seized of those lands and toft without an heir. For which cause it is ordered to seize the said lands and toft into the lady's hands, and to inquire at the next court how long John occupied the said lands.
General InformationCf. In a court two years later (3 June 1387), John Bret comes and asks for a surrender of land to be confirmed because the court rolls were burnt [ERO D/DP M24]
