Text (English translation)Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful John Holt, Robert de Stokes, knight, and William Thirnyng, greetings. Know you that, whereas lord John, formerly king of England, our progenitor, had granted and by his charter, which we have confirmed by our charter, had confirmed to his men of Godmanchester his manor of Godmanchester, to hold of him and his heirs at fee farm well and in peace, freely, quietly and entirely with all things pertaining to the farm of that manor, paying £120 a year. And now our men and tenants of the same manor have entreated us as to whether the men of the vill of Huntingdon had lately in the insurrection placed certain barriers before the bridge of Huntingdon, on account of resistance of insurrectors of this kind, on the ground of our same men and tenants of the said manor from the licence of our aforesaid men and tenants. Nevertheless, the same men of Huntingdon now completely refuse to pull out and remove those barriers or to allow our same men and tenants of Godmanchester to amicably pull out and remove those barriers, although they have been often thereupon requested, asserting less truly that those barriers are fixed in their own ground, to the serious damage of our same men and tenants of Godmanchester and the manifest danger of the disinheritance and diminution of their aforesaid farm. We wish to make provision for a remedy for them. We, wishing that what is just is done in this matter, and being more fully confident in your loyalty and circumspection, have assigned you and two of you, of whom you, the aforesaid John, we wish to be one, to inquire by the oath of upright and lawful men of the county of Huntingdon, by whom the truth of the matter can be better known, excepting men of the aforesaid vills of Godmanchester and Huntingdon, as to whether the aforesaid barriers are placed and fixed in the ground of our same men and tenants of Godmanchester or on the ground of the same men of Huntingdon, and by whom they were placed there, and for what reason and when, how and in what way, and whether from the licence of our same men and tenants of Godmanchester, or not. And therefore we command you that, at a certain day and place, which you, or two of you, of whom you, the aforesaid John, we wish to be one, will provide for this, you make that inquisition, and without delay you send it, clearly and openly made, to us in our Chancery under your seals and the seals of those, by whom it will have been made, and this writ. For we have commanded our sheriff of the aforesaid county that, at a certain day and place, which you, or two of you, of whom you, the aforesaid John, we wish to be one, cause him to know, you cause to come before you, or two of you, of whom you, the aforesaid John, we wish to be one, so many and such upright and lawful men of the aforesaid county, excepting the men, before excepted, by whom the truth of the matter can be better known in the premises and inquired into. In testimony of which matter, we have caused these our letters to be made patent. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster on the 22nd day of May in the fifth year of our reign. Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to the sheriff of Huntingdon, greetings. Whereas we have assigned our beloved and faithful John Holt, Robert de Stokes, knight, and William Thirnyng, and two of them, of whom we wish the aforesaid John to be one, to inquire by the oath of upright and lawful men of your bailiwick, by whom the truth of the matter can be better know, excepting men of the vills of Godmanchester and Huntingdon, as to whether certain barriers, placed before the bridge of Huntingdon on account of resistance of the insurrectors, are placed and fixed on the ground of our men and tenants of Godmanchester or on the ground of the men of Huntingdon, and by whom they were placed there, and for what cause and when, how and in what way, and whether from the licence of our same men and tenants of Godmanchester, or not, just as in our letters patent, thereupon completed, is more fully contained. We order you that, at a certain day and place, which the same John, Robert and William, or two of them, of whom we wish the aforesaid John to be one, cause you to know, you cause to come before them or two of them, of whom we wish the aforesaid John to be one, so many and such upright and lawful men of your said bailiwick, by whom the truth of the matter can be better known in the premises and inquired into. And you are to have there this writ. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster on the 21st day of May in the fifth year of our reign. Scarle. John Holt, Robert de Stokes, knight, and William Thirnyng, assigned to inquire by the oath of upright and lawful men of the county of Huntingdonshire as to whether the barriers, placed and fixed by the men of the vill of Huntingdon lately in the insurrection before the bridge of Huntingdon on account of resistance of insurrectors of this kind, are placed and fixed on the ground of the men and tenants of the lord king of Godmanchester, or on the ground of the men of Huntingdon, to the sheriff of Huntingdon greetings. On the part of the lord king we have ordered you that you cause to come before us at Huntingdon on Monday next before the feast of St Michael 24 upright and lawful men of your county, excepting men of the aforesaid vills of Godmanchester and Huntingdon, by whom the truth of the matter about the premises and other circumstances concerning the premises can be better known and inquired into, to do then and there those things, which are enjoined to them on the part of the lord king. And you are to have there the names of the jurors, whom you have so caused to come, the writ of close of the lord king, which has thereupon come to you, and this mandate. Dated at Huntingdon on the third day of August in the sixth year of the reign of Richard, king of England and France. [Dorse]: The execution of this writ is clear in the panel attached to this writ. Thomas Sewale, sheriff. Inquisition, taken before John Holt and William Thirnyng, assigned by commission of the lord king to inquire into barriers, placed before the bridge of Huntingdon, at Huntingdon on Monday next before the feast of St Michael in the sixth year of the reign of Richard, king of England and France, by the oath of William Dulay, John Mayster, Hugh Porthors, John Parkere, John Leverych, Robert Dadyngton, William Kelleshull, Thomas Draper, John Kyng, John Eyr of Sibthorpe, William Millere and William Colyn of Gransden, sworn. Who say upon their oath that the barriers, fixed and placed before the bridge of Huntingdon, are placed and fixed on the ground of the vill of Godmanchester and not on the ground of the vill of Huntingdon and by the men of the commonalty of the vill of Huntingdon, viz before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the fifth year of the reign of Richard, king of England and France, at the time of the insurrection of the enemies of the king, and for the aforesaid reason, and from the licence of John Crull, then one of the bailiffs of the vill of Godmanchester, and with the assent and will of the aforesaid John Crull and Walter Rudham, then one of the bailiffs of the aforesaid vill of Huntingdon, are fixed and placed, and not otherwise, nor in another way. 4657Order to inquire into defences erected against rebels by men of HuntingdonOrder to John Holt, Robert de Stokes, knight, and William Thirnyng, to inquire into the complaint of the tenants of the manor of Godmanchester, who say that that men of the vill of Huntingdon placed barriers before the bridge of Huntingdon against the rebels during the recent insurrection, on the grounds of the said manor, but now refuse to remove them or to allow the men of Godmanchester to remove them, to their damage. Jury summoned excepting men of Godmanchester and Huntingdon for 3 August 1382. The inquisition finds that the barriers have been fixed on the soil of the town of Godmanchester and not that of Huntingdon since 24 June 1381 at the time of the insurrection, by the licence of John Crull, then one of the bailiffs of the vill of Godmanchester, and with the assent and will of the aforesaid John Crull and Walter Rudham, then one of the bailiffs of the aforesaid vill of Huntingdon.Go to incidents page
