Text (English translation)Court 18 March 1382 ... The bailiff had been ordered to summon all the tenants of this manor at Sible Hedingham to be here and show separately how they hold their tenements what legal rights they had in them, and by what services they hold, because the court rolls and other (written) evidences of this manor were burnt at the time of the rumour. And the bailiff testifies here that he has summoned them. And upon this Thomas Dodeman comes and says that he holds 11 and 1/2 acres of land, 1 acre of woodland and 1/2 acre of pasture in Sible Hedingham which have been part of tenement Teband and he says that he renders to the lady 10d per year in total and that Peter Asselote holds the remainder of the said tenement and performs all the services owed with the exception of the 10d which he, present in court, acknowledges. And the aforesaid Thomas requests to have his tenement back for himself and his heirs as he held before. And because it is attested by inquisition by jury that the aforesaid Thomas did not help nor agree to burn the aforesaid court rolls, therefore his said tenement is given back (re-granted) to him and his heirs to hold at will of the lady for services etc. And of his own free will he pays a fine for re-entry [in the margin: 2s] Thomas Dodeman surrenders into the hand of the lady 2 acres of Molland in Sible Hedingham by 'le Toft' recently part of the tenement Teband to the benefit of Peter Asselote and his heirs which is conceded out of seisin by the lady to him and his heirs to hold by the rod at will of the lady for services etc. according to the customs of the manor. He pays the entry fine and does fealty [in the margin: 12d]. William Noreys acknowledges that he holds of the lady 3 acres Molland in Sible Hedingham for services of 18d per year and 1 boon-work in autumn and suit of court. John Cardere, toft-land and 15 acres of land; 6s rent per year and 2 boon-works in autumn and suit of court. Walter Mayner, 3 acres of land and 1 rood meadow; 8d rent per year and suit of court. John Broun, 5 acres of land; 2s 6d rent per year, 1 boo-work in autumn and suit of court. Gilbert Orgor, a messuage and 12 acres of land; 18d rent per year, 1 boon-work and suit of court. Richard Walsshe, a croft containing 3 acres of land and 1/2 acre of pasture and meadow for servives [gap] William atte Medwe, 5 acres of land; 18d rent [gap] The land has been kept in the hands of the lady because of the burning of the court rolls ... It was found by inquisition by jury that the same did not help nor agree to burn the aforesaid court rolls, therefore the said tenements are given back (re-granted) to them and their heirs to hold at will of the lady for services etc. And of their own free will they pay a fine for re-entry namely William Noreys 6d, John Cardere 2s 6d, Walter Mayner 7d, John Broun 10d, Gilbert Orgor 2s, Richard Walsshe 8d, William atte Medwe 3d. To this court comes John Noreys and acknowledges that he holds of the lady a messuage and 15 acres of bondland in Sible Hedingham by service of 4s 8d per year, 2 boon-works and suit of court etc., which tenement was seized into the lady's hand by reason of the burning of the court rolls and other evidences of the lady of this manor at the time of the 'rumour' etc. And because it is found by inquest that John neither helped nor consented to the burning of the rolls, therefore the tenement is delivered to him, to hold to himself and his heirs as he holds it before, at the will of the lady, by service etc. And he gives 2s 6d as a fine etc. And knowing that there was exacted from this tenement 2 work-services with the plough, namely one for the wheat-sowing and one for the winter-sowing, ploughing the lady's land with as many oxen as he yoked to his own plough on the tenement, and because it is found that John Hangkishale, who used to hold that tenement, used to do this work from as long ago as anyone can remember, therefore the said John Noreys is ordered to satisfy the lady for the arrears of that service or to show why he should not perform it, and likewise John (like the other tenants) should maintain one perch of the park fence etc. [in the margin: fin' ii s]
