Text (English translation)Wivenhoe. First court with leet there on Wednesday next after the feast of Epiphany of the lord and after the burning of all the rolls of the court and of account 5 Richard II [8 January 1382] Because all the tenants of the lord holding native (bond) tenements, with other evil-doers and adherents, maliciously burnt and caused to be burnt both the rolls of the court here and the extents (surveys) and rolls of account, and claiming to hold the said tenements at their own will, freely, and not at the will of the lord as they previously did, to the disinheriting of the lord, wherefore all the said lands and tenements are seized into the hands of the lord as forfeited. And now the lord, of his special grace, regrants all the said lands and tenements to the different tenants. To be held at the will of the lord in bondage, by the ancient services and customs, as will appear below. The lord grants to William le Man and Margery his wife one native (bond) tenement and 30 acres of land with appurtenances. To have and to hold all the said lands and tenements with their [appurtenances] to the said William and Margery and the heirs of the said William at the will of the lord by ancient services and customs. And he gives a fine as above [the sum of the fine in the margin is too faded to be readable] [Followed by 71 similar grants] [In the margin in a later, 15th century, hand] When it is said here that all the rolls of the court and of account were burnt etc., it is untrue about the accounts, because there are some before this time etc., likewise there is an extent made in the 40th year of Edward III. But query about the rolls of court, because they are not yet found.
