Text (English translation) | Inquisition held at North Petherton, 18 September 1381, before William Style, escheator in the county of Somerset, into the goods and chattels of Thomas Engilby of Bridgwater who had on the 16 July 1381, the day he was charged by Peter de Courtenay and his fellow justices, ... for treasons and insurrections, and he fled. ... The jury presents that he had wheat, hay and pigs ('blada, femi et porcos') worth 50s and a carucate [ploughland, between 80 and 120 acre] in North Petherton valued at 40s annually which Thomas had granted to his son John to hold for life, but which Thomas, notwithstanding his grant, has always occupied. Inquisition held at 'Bodetly'(?) [Butleigh?], 6 September 1381, into the goods and chattels of John Palmere (Palude?) of ? which he had in the county of Somerset on the 16 July 1381, the day he was charged by Peter de Courtenay and his fellow justices, ... for treasons and insurrections, and he fled ... The jury presents that John Palmere granted all his goods and chattels to John Meryet, knight, William Banastre, John by the Well and John Knyght of 'Chywton' [Chewton Mendip?] on 6 June 1379 and have remained their possession ever since; the goods and chattels are valued at £10; they are in the hands of John Eyr and William Hill. |
