Text (English translation) | Escheator inquisition by Thomas Peyre, escheator in the county of Bedfordshire, held in Shefford (Bedfordshire), 29 July 1381 on the oath of William King, John Badenho, Thomas Brounyng, William Bakere, Richard Testard, Sampson Mundson, Richard Wyth, John Arch, John Nicol, Henry Phelpot, Thomas Wylye and Roger Ader, jurors, who say: [among other cases] that John Barbour of Luton, fugitive because of insurrection ('fugitivus pro insurreccione') has diverse goods and chattels: a bronze pot, valued 2s; 2 chairs, 12d; one axe(?), 4d; 8 chicken, 8d; a bronze pan, 3d; 300 red herrings ('allec rubeum'), 4s; a bow and 15 arrows, 6d; sum 8s 9d. Robert Whitebrach of Luton, weaver, fugitive because of insurrection, has goods and chattels valued at 6d. Richard Thresshere of Luton, fugitive because of insurrection, has goods and chattels: a bronze pot, 9d; a bronze pan, 9d, a tripod, 1d; sum 1s 7d. John Preston of Luton, tailor, fugitive because of insurrection, has goods and chattels: a tripod, 8d; and other goods and chattels ('et alia bona et catalla'), 12d; sum 1s 8d. William Colder of Luton, fugitive because of insurrection, has goods and chattels: a pair of weaving looms ('webbelomes'), 12d. The property of the fugitive traitors are in the hands of the constable of Luton. |
