Text (English translation)Hertfordshire The lord king sent to his beloved and faithful Robert Tresilian and his fellow justices of the lord king his writ of close in these words: Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful Robert Tresilian, his justice assigned to hold pleas before us, greetings. We are sending to you a certain indictment, made before our beloved and faithful Thomas Sakevill and his fellows, lately assigned by our letters patent to inquire into the death of William Brag, wickedly killed at Gubblecote. Which same indictment we have caused to come before us into our Chancery, under the foot of our seal, commanding that, the aforesaid indictment having been seen, you cause to be thereupon done further what should be done lawfully and according to the law and custom of our realm of England. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster on the 26th day of January in the fifth year of our reign. The writ of patens to John de Aylesbury follows in these words: Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful John de Aylesbury, Thomas Sakevill, Thomas Doyly and John de la Hay and to the sheriff of Hertfordshire, greetings. Know you that we have assigned to you, four, three and two of you, to inquire by the oath of upright and lawful men of the aforesaid county, by whom the truth of the matter can be better known, into the truth more fully about who were the wrongdoers and disturbers of our peace who wickedly killed William Brag at Gubblecote, by what occasion, how and in what way, and at whose procuration that was done upon the man who was killed, and who knowingly harboured the said wrongdoers afterwards, and about all other articles and circumstances howsoever concerning that death. And therefore we command you that at certain days and places, which you, four, three or two of you, will have provided for this, you make an inquisition upon the premises and send it without delay, clearly and openly made, to us into our Chancery under your seals and those of four, three or two of you, and the seals of those, by whom that inquisition will have been made, and this writ. And you, the aforesaid sheriff, at certain days and places to be pre-arranged by you, four, three or two of you, are to cause to come before you, four, three or two of you, so many and such upright and lawful men from your bailiwick, by whom the truth of the matter in the premises can be better known and inquired into. In testimony of which matter, we have caused these our letters to be made patent. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster on the 17th day of December in the fifth year of our reign. The indictment thereupon made follows in these words: Inquisition taken at Rickmansworth on Tuesday next after the feast of the Epiphany of the lord in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest before Thomas Sakevill and Thomas Doyly, assigned by letters patent of the said lord king to inquire into the death of William Brag, who had been wickedly killed at Gubblecote, just as in the said letters patent thereupon completed and attached to this inquisition, is more fully contained, by the oath of Thomas Goldyngton, William Crokesle, John atte More, Henry Langele, John atte Hacche, Henry Langele, Henry Ymayne, William Mayn, Thomas atte Nasshe, John Selvestre, William Gromet, John Kakebred and Thomas Tylere. Who say upon their oath that Hugh the Parsonesprest of Puttenham, William Fordham, Walter Freman, Richard Merston of Long Marston, Richard Baldok, Thomas Baldok and Richard Fordham, and others, on Tuesday next before the feast of St Alban the martyr in the fourth year of the reign of the aforesaid king, at the time of the insurrection of the community of the counties of Essex and Kent, came at Long Marston in the county of Hertfordshire and sought out there the aforesaid William Brag, hayward and servant of Edmund de Stonore, and plotted and threatened to kill him, if he would have been found then and there, and the same William Brag having not been found then and there, the same Hugh, William Fordham, Walter, Richard, Thomas Baldok and Richard feloniously and traitorously against their faith and allegiance made an insurrection there and burnt the charters, deeds, rentals and other muniments of the same Edmund and the others. And the same Hugh, William Fordham, Walter, Richard, Richard, Thomas Baldok and Richard, being not contented at this, but continued their malice in this matter until Tuesday next after the feast of the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the fifth year of the said king. And on the aforesaid Tuesday next after the feast of the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the fifth year of the said king, at Gubblecote, aforesaid, they made an insurrection feloniously and traitorously, as is abovesaid, and they came to the house of John Fordham and there the aforesaid Hugh the Parsonesprest of Puttenham feloniously struck the aforesaid William Brag with a certain cannonball on the head, and the aforesaid William Fordham feloniously struck the aforesaid William Brag with one staff then and there on the neck, and the aforesaid Walter Freman feloniously struck the aforesaid William Brag with one staff then and there on the head, and the aforesaid Richard Merston, Richard Baldok, Thomas Baldok and Richard Fordham feloniously struck the aforesaid William Brag with staffs then and there, and feloniously broke his legs and arms, by which wounds and blows the aforesaid William Brag immediately died. And so the aforesaid Hugh, William Fordham, Walter, Richard, Richard, Thomas Baldok and Richard, on the aforesaid Tuesday next after the feast of the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the fifth year of the said king, at Gubblecote, aforesaid, in the house of the aforesaid John Fordham, wickedly and feloniously killed and murdered the aforesaid William Brag. In testimony of which matter, the aforesaid jurors have affixed their seals to this inquisition. Dated at Rickmansworth on the abovesaid day and year. By the records of the fifth year. By which the sheriff was ordered that he does not omit, etc, from taking them, if, etc. And now, namely on Thursday next after the octave of St Michael in this same term before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid William Fordham, Richard Baldok and Thomas Baldok in the custody of the marshal, who at another time had been committed into his custody for certain causes, and they spoke separately as to how they wish to acquit themselves of the aforesaid felonies and treasons. They say separately that they are not in any way thereof guilty, and thereupon for good and for bad they put themselves upon the country. Therefore the jurors thereupon came before the lord king on the morrow of All Souls, wherever, etc, and who, etc, to give judgement, etc. And in the meantime the aforesaid William Fordham, Richard Baldok and Thomas Baldok are committed to prison in the custody of Robert Bracy, marshal, etc. At which morrow of All Souls before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid William Fordham, Richard Baldok and Thomas Baldok in the custody of the marshal. And similarly the jurors came, who having been elected, tried and sworn to this, say upon oath that the aforesaid William Fordham, Richard Baldok and Thomas Baldok are in no way guilty of the aforesaid felonies and treasons, nor by these occasions did they withdraw themselves. Therefore the same William Fordham, Richard Baldok and Thomas Baldok are to go thereupon quit. And the aforesaid William Freman in the meantime is committed to the marshal. And the sheriff is ordered that he does not omit, etc, from taking the aforesaid Hugh the Parsonesprest of Puttenham and the others, if, etc. Afterwards, namely in three weeks after Easter Day in this same year, before the lord king at Westminster, there came the aforesaid Walter in the custody of the marshal and he spoke as to how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid treasons and felonies. Who says that he is no way guilty thereof. And thereupon he puts himself upon the country. Therefore the jurors thereupon come before the lord king in the octave of Holy Trinity wherever, etc, and who, etc, to give judgment, etc. And upon this there came Roger de Brusele, William de Thornton, Robert Twenges and John Smyth and they mainprised for the aforesaid Walter to have him before the lord king at the aforesaid term, etc.
