Text (English translation) | Surrey The lord king sent his writ close to the sheriffs of London in these words: Richard by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to the sheriffs of London, greetings. Whereas we ordered our beloved and faithful Robert Bealknap, by our writ, to send before us the indictment made before him and his companions, appointed to chastise and punish certain rebels in the county of Surrey who lately rose up against our peace and in disturbance of our people, in unlawful assemblies and gatherings, and those who wished to rise up in future, concerning certain treasons for which Ralph atte Croft is allegedly indicted, and our writ which comes to him on this matter, so that we have them, with everything touching on the matter, on this coming Monday, wherever we then are in England, to be determined according to the law and custom of our realm of England, we order you to have the same Ralph, allegedly arrested and detained in our gaol of Newgate in your custody for the aforesaid reason, appear before us with the cause of his arrest on the aforesaid day, to stand to right there concerning the aforesaid indictment, according to the aforesaid law and custom. And you are to have this writ there. Witness myself at Westminster, the twenty-second day of November in the fifth year of our reign. The indictment of the same writ is as follows: We, John Hende and John Rote, sheriffs of London, inform you that long [before] the arrival of this writ, namely on the eve of St Michael the archangel last, in the fifth year of the present king's reign, the Ralph atte Croft named below was delivered to us by Walter Doget and William Knyghtcote, lately sheriffs of the same city, our predecessors, to keep him safely in the lord king's prison of Newgate, London, for various treasons and other felonies concerning which he is allegedly indicted before William Walleworth and his companions, the lord king's justices. These indictments are with the aforesaid justices; but we will readily have the body of the same Ralph before you as is ordered in the writ. This Ralph atte Croft is handed over to the keeping of the marshal, etc. Whereupon the lord king sent his beloved and faithful William Walleworth his writ close in these words: Richard by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful William Walleworth, greetings. Wishing for certain reasons that the indictments made before you and your companions, lately our justices appointed to hear and determine various felonies, treasons, trespasses and other crimes in our city of London and its suburbs, and in the counties of Surrey, Sussex and elsewhere, concerning certain treasons, felonies, trespasses and other crimes for which Ralph atte Crofte of Lambeth is allegedly indicted, should be determined before us and not elsewhere, we order you to send us the aforesaid indictments, with everything touching on them, under your seal, clearly and openly, and safely and securely, and this writ, so that we may have them on this coming Wednesday, wherever we then are in England, so that we may further have done what is rightly to be done, and according to the law and custom of our realm of England. Witness myself at Westminster, the twenty-fifth day of November, in the fifth year of our reign. The indictments mentioned in the aforesaid writ follow in these words: The inquisition of the neigbourhood of Kennington in the county of Surrey, held at Southwark in the aforesaid county, namely on the twenty-second day of July in the fifth year of the reign of King Richard the second after the conquest, before William Walleworth, mayor of the city of London, and his companions, the lord king's justices appointed to inquire into, hear and determine certain treasons, homicides and felonies perpetrated in any way in the county of Surrey and elsewhere, on the oath of William Pelham, Robert atte Welde, Stephen atte Gate, Thomas Charetour, Richard Lambourne, Stephen Poyent, William Kyng, William Tabeler, Elias de Brugges, Nicholas Brode, Bartholomew Carpenter and Simon Wylcok; who say on their oath that Ralph atte Croft, on the Friday following the feast of Corpus Christi, that is, the fifteenth day of June, in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest, was the first to rouse the people at North Lambeth in the aforesaid county to rise up against the lord king and his peace. And that a certain Thomas Taillour came spontaneously and purely of his own free will to the same Ralph there; which Ralph and Thomas rose up there in the aforesaid form with many unknown people of their faction. And they say that William Senare and William Pontere of Battersea treacherously and feloniously seized and burnt the custumal and other muniments and documentary evidence of the said lord king's belonging to the aforesaid manor of Kennington, in the keeping of the bailiff of the said manor and found there, through the power, aid and assistance of the aforesaid Ralph and Thomas. And they say that the aforesaid Simon [Gerard], John [Haukes], William Brangwayn, Roger [Norman], Richard [Lorthoun], Thomas Rolf, Walter [Lorchon], Walter [Percok], Bartholomew [Carpenter] and John [Waryn] were forced by the said Ralph and Thomas Taillour to come there, and were there more to save the said custumal, muniments and documentary evidence, and to save the life of the said bailiff of the same manor than to do any evil there, as appeared at the time through their will etc. From the records of the fifth year. Whereupon the aforesaid Ralph atte Crofte appears, led by the sheriffs of London because of a certain writ of the lord king addressed to them; and he is handed over to the marshal. And immediately, led by the marshal, he appears and is asked how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid felonies and treasons. He says that he is in no way guilty of them, and on this he puts himself on the country for good and evil. Therefore a jury is to appear on this before the lord king at the octave of St Hilary, wherever etc., and who etc., to investigate etc. And in the meantime the aforesaid Ralph atte Crofte is delivered to prison in the custody of Robert Bracy, the marshal etc. Afterwards the process on this against the aforesaid Ralph continued, through juries adjourned before the lord king, until fifteen days after Easter day then following. On which day the aforesaid Ralph appears before the lord king at Westminster, in the custody of the marshal. And the jurors likewise appear, who, chosen, assessed and sworn for this, say on their oath that the aforesaid Ralph is in no way guilty of the aforesaid treasons and felonies, but that he withdrew himself for that reason. Therefore he is to go quit of this. His chattels are worth twenty-nine pounds, concerning which William Hunte, keeper of the manor of Kennington answers etc. Whereupon William Gleve of Southwark, Robert Lutele of London, Walter Walpole and Richard Piryman appear, and stand bail for the aforesaid Ralph atte Croft, that he will henceforth conduct himself well and faithfully towards the lord king and his people, and that he will not rise up, nor will he cause anyone to rise up against the lord king or his people, against his allegiance or against the lord king's peace; that is, each of the aforesaid mainpernors under a penalty of a hundred pounds, and the aforesaid Ralph atte Crofte under a penalty of two hundred pounds. And both the aforesaid Ralph and the aforesaid mainpernors acknowledge that they owe the lord king these sums, namely the aforesaid Ralph the aforesaid two hundred pounds, and each of the aforesaid mainpernors the aforesaid hundred pounds, if the aforesaid Ralph should happen to do wrong concerning the aforesaid or any of the aforesaid, and this is legitimately proved etc. |
