Text (English translation)Cambridgeshire: The jurors of diverse hundred of the aforesaid county at another time, namely in the term of Holy Trinity in the sixth year of the reign of the now king, before the lord king at Cambridge presented that John Haras of Herringswell, on Friday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, feloniously and traitorously made an insurrection against the lord king and his subjects, and feloniously and traitorously broke into the close and houses of the prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England at Chippenham, and took 300 quarters of malt, worth £60, found there, and sold that to diverse men of the county, and carried away the silver thereupon issuing. Item, they presented that the aforesaid John Haras, on Friday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of the now king, by force and arms, broke into the close and houses of the prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England at Chippenham, and took and carried away his goods and chattels, viz malt, to the value of £60, found there, against the peace, etc. By which the sheriff was ordered that he does not omit, etc, from taking the aforesaid John Haras, if, etc. And now, namely on Tuesday next after the feast of St Martin in that same term, before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid John Haras and he handed himself over to the prison of the marshal of the lord king by the aforesaid occasions, who is committed to the marshal. And immediately having been brought by the marshal, he came and spoke as to how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid treasons, felonies and trespasses, etc. Which same John Haras produced a certain writ of the lord king of close, directed to the justices here, in these words: Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful Robert Tresilian and his fellows, our justices, assigned to hold pleas before us, greetings. Whereas, from our special grace, at the supplication of the community of our realm of England, and with the assent of the prelates of the dukes, earls and barons of the same realm in our Parliament, gathered at Westminster on Monday in the octave of St Michael in the sixth year of our reign, we pardoned and remised to all and singular our subjects and inhabitants of the realm, of whatever status, grade or condition they be (excepting all those, whose names at another time were delivered in our Parliaments in the fifth and sixth years of our reign to be excepted from all grace then made by us, as if, namely, the principal starters, abettors and procurers of the insurrection, which lately traitorously arose within our aforesaid kingdom, whereof they are charged, and also three other persons, citizens of London, who in our said Parliament were also especially charged of certain articles and treasons, made in the said insurrection, and all others being fully in the same case of the said three citizens or any one of them, and also all and singular persons of the town of Bury St Edmunds similarly excepted), the suit of our peace and whatever pertains to us or could pertain, for all kinds of treasons and felonies, howsoever made or perpetrated in the said insurrection, namely between the first day of Mary in the fifth year of our reign and the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist then next following, and whereof they are indicted, charged or appealed, and also outlawries, if any will have been proclaimed against them or any one of them by these occasions, and we have thereupon granted our firm peace to them and each one of them. In such a way, nevertheless, that they are to stand trial in our court, if anyone wishes to thereupon speak against them or any one of them about the premises or any of the premises, just as in the statute thereupon issued is more fully contained. We command you that, [as regards] John Haras of Herringswell other called John Haras of Mildenhall in the county of Suffolk, if he is not any of the persons excepted from our grace, as is aforesaid, then you are not to trouble in any way or harm the same John contrary to the tenor of the grace and form of the aforesaid remise and pardon. Witnessed by me, myself, at Westminster, on the 6th day of November in the 7th year of our reign. By pretext of which writ, there having been seen the roll of names, which were so excepted in the said Parliament, and it having been delivered in court here, on account that the same John Haras is not contained in the said roll among the names so excepted, it is considered that the same John Haras, as regards the aforesaid felonies, treasons and trespasses, by virtue of the aforesaid grace and remise, should go without day, etc.
