Text (English translation)Northamptonshire The lord king sent his beloved and faithful William la Zouche of Harringworth his writ close in these words: Richard by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful William la Zouche of Harringworth, greetings. Wishing for certain reasons to be informed concerning the tenor of an indictment made before you and your companions, appointed to chastise and punish certain rebels who recently rose up against our peace and to the distress of our people, and who have wished to rise up in the future, concerning certain treasons and felonies of which William Napton is allegedly indicted, we order you to send the tenor of the aforesaid indictment to us in our Chancery under your seal, clearly and openly without delay; and this writ. Witness myself at Westminster on the twelfth day of July in the sixth year of our reign. The tenor mentioned in the aforesaid writ follows in these words: The inquisition held at Northampton on the Tuesday following the Translation of St Thomas the Martyr, in the sixth year of the reign of King Richard the second after the conquest, before William de la Zouche of Harringworth and his companions, the lord king's justices appointed to chastise and punish various malefactors and disturbers of the lord king's peace in the county of Northampton, both within liberties and outside them, rising up and wishing to rise up in future, on the oath of twelve sworn men of the town of Northampton, who say on their oath that William Napton of Northampton, during the whole time of the loathsome disturbance lately brought about by various men rising up against the lord king's peace and against their allegiance within the realm of England, was a common rouser and inciter of many men of the community of the town of Northampton, with word, art, and contrivance, to make them rise up in a hostile fashion against the then mayor of the town of Northampton and other upright and law-worthy men of the said town of Northampton, and against the lord king's peace; and he afterwards was and still is an inciter of such injustices insofar as he can be: from which great danger and disturbance of the lord king's peace could arise. And because the court wishes to be informed concerning the aforesaid indictment as fully and wholly as before the aforesaid William and his companions etc., who wished to be informed, before proceeding further in the matter, the same William is ordered to send the aforesaid indictment, with everything touching on it, under his seal, clearly and openly before the lord king fifteen days after St Martin's day wherever etc. so that further etc. And concerning this it is attested here in court that the aforesaid William Napton is arrested and held in the gaol of the town of Northampton. The lord king's bailiffs of the aforesaid town are ordered to have the body of the aforesaid William Napton, under safe and secure conduct, together with the reason for his arrest and detention before the lord king at the aforesaid term etc. On this quinzaine of St Martin the same bailiffs, namely Reginald Barkere and William Shefford return as follows: we will have the body of William de Napton, named in the writ, seized by us and held in our keeping in the lord king's gaol of the town of Northampton, before you at the day and place contained in the said writ, to do what the writ requires, together the reason for the arrest and detention of the same William de Napton; because he was arrested by us by virtue of a certain order addressed to us on the matter by William la Zouche of Harringworth and his companions, the lord king's justices appointed for various malefactors and disturbers of the lord king's peace in the county of Northampton, both within liberties and outside. Which order we send to you, sewn to this writ. The aforesaid order follows in these words: William la Zouch of Harringworth [and] his companions, the lord king's justices appointed for various malefactors and disturbers of the lord king's peace in the county of Northampton, both within liberties and outside, to the baillifs of the liberty of the town of Northampton, greetings. On behalf of the lord king we order you to seize William Napton of Northampton wherever he might be found in your bailiwick, and to have him safely guarded in the lord king's prison until he is delivered according to the law and custom of the realm of England concerning various articles for which he has been indicted before us. And do not fail to do this. And we further inform you that we have no other reason for the sezing of the said William de Napton's body than is specified above, as this writ supposes. And this William de Napton is handed over to the marshal. And on the same quinzaine of St Martin the aforesaid William le Zouche sent before the lord king the aforesaid indictment held before him, in these words: The inquisition held at Northampton on the Tuesday following the feast of the Translation of St Thomas the Martyr, in the sixth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest, before William la Zouch of Harringworth and his companions, the lord king's justices appointed to chastise and punish various malefactors and disturbers of the lord king's peace in the county of Northampton, both within liberties and outside, rising up, and wishing to rise up in future, on the oath of Thomas Peyntour, Williem Grigge, John Gedyngton, John Prentys, William Shifford, William Crudworth, Nicholas Baude, Robert Bertram, William Nunecourt, John Martyn, John Uttokeshatur and Richard Raulyn, who say on their oath that William Napton of Northampton, during the whole time of the loathsome disturbance lately brought about by various men rising up against the lord king's peace and against their allegiance within the realm of England, was a common rouser and inciter of many men of the community of the town of Northampton, with word, art, and contrivance, to make them rise up in a hostile fashion against the then mayor of the town of Northampton and other upright and law-worthy men of the said town of Northampton, and against the lord king's peace; and he afterwards was and still is an inciter of such injustices insofar as he can be: from which great danger and disturbance of the lord king's peace could arise. From the records of the sixth year.
