Text (English translation) | Cambridgeshire John, vicar of the church of Fordham, John Thebaud, chaplain, Alan Rous, John Fitz Piers, John Smyth of Fordham atte Grene, Nicholas Leyburn and John Cook, barker, were attached to answer to Elena Makworth, together with William Bocher of Fordham and Thomas Barkere of Fordham in a plea of why with force and arms they broke into the close and houses of the same Elena at Soham, and seized and carried off her goods and chattels found there to the value of forty pounds, and other outrages etc. to the great harm etc. and against the present king's peace. And concerning this the same Elena, through John Kyrkeby, her attorney, makes complaint that the aforesaid John the vicar, John Thebaud, Alan, John Fitz Piers, John Smyth, Nicholas and John Cook together etc. on the Sunday following the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard, the second after the conquest, with force and arms, namely with swords, sticks etc. broke into the same Elena's close and houses at Soham, and took and carried off her goods and chattels found there, namely linen and woolen cloth, vessels of brass, wood and lead, barley, wheat, peas and oats, gold and silver and other utensils of the house to the value etc. and other outrages etc. against the peace etc.; concerning which she says that she has been injured and has damages to the value of one hundred pounds. And on this she brings suit etc. And the aforesaid John the vicar, John Thebaud, Alan, John Fitz Piers, John Smyth, Nicholas and John Cook appear through Thomas Crowe, their attorney, and defend the force and injury when etc. And they say that they are in no way guilty of this. And on this they put themselves on the country. And the aforesaid Elena likewise. Therefore a jury is to appear before the lord king on this, fifteen days after the day of Holy Trinity wherever etc. and who do not etc. to investigate etc. because as much etc. The same day is given to the parties etc. |
