Text (English translation)Kent: At another time before Thomas Holand, earl of Kent, and his fellow late justices of the lord king, assigned to hear and determine diverse felonies and treasons, perpetrated by certain wrongdoers, lately insurging against the lord king, it was presented that Thomas atte Raven of Rochester and others, jointly and separately, on Wednesday in the week of Pentecost in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard II, at Dartford, by himself and by diverse and unknown others, made diverse risings and congregations against the lord king and his people and feloniously killed John Stonhelle of Maidstone at Maidstone on Friday next following in the aforesaid year, and they broke and burnt down the house of William Topclyve on the same day and year and goods and chattels to the value of 1,000 marks, and so continuing, with others unknown, on Saturday next following, came to the manor of Nicholas Herynges of North Cray and knocked it down, and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 1,000 marks, and perpetrated diverse other treasons against the lord king and his people, continuing from that day until the present. And they coerced Thomas Tryvet, knight, Thomas de Cobeham, knight, John de Frennyngham, James de Pekham and several others from the county of Kent, and imprisoned them until they made oath to be part of the assemblies of the same men, and they broke all the gaols of the lord king in the aforesaid county, and they caused all the felons that were found in the same to go out, and traitorously burnt and set fire to all the evidences of the lord king, his crown and his escheatery in the house of Thomas de Shardelowe of Dartford, chief coroner of the lord king, and of Elias Reyner of Strood, in the places of the aforesaid vills. Which same indictment the lord king afterwards, for certain causes, caused to come before him to be terminated. And also the same Thomas by the name of Thomas Raven of Southwark was indicted before William de Walleworth, late mayor of the lord king of the city of London, and his fellow late justices of the lord king, assigned to hear and determine these kinds of treasons and felonies in the city of London, it was presented that Thomas Raven of Southwark, on Friday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard II after the conquest, was one wrongdoer rising up against the lord king in the city of London, and that, he on the same day, together with other wrongdoers so rising up against the lord king, came to the house of Reginald Aleyn at Walbrook, London, and there feloniously took one statute merchant from the aforesaid Reginald concerning a great sum, in which the same Thomas was obliged to the aforesaid Reginald, and also forced the said Reginald to make a fine of ten marks with the same Thomas because of fear of death there. And also before the aforesaid William de Walleworth and his fellow late justices of the lord king, assigned to hear and determine these sorts of felonies and treasons in the county of Surrey, it was presented that Thomas atte Raven of Southwark was the principal and chief wrongdoer and maintainer, and feloniously and traitorously made an insurrection in the company of other wrongdoers against the lord king and his people, and broke the houses and dwellings of Richard Imworth and other loyal men of the same lord king, and feloniously took and plundered their goods and chattels both in the said vill of Southwark and also in other places. And also the same Thomas by the name of Thomas Raven, together with other wrongdoers unknown, on Wednesday next before the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the reign of King Richard II, came by force and arms, riding at Southwark in the county of Surrey, and there feloniously and traitorously undertook to knock down and break the houses and tenements of Richard Imworth at Southwark and similarly the houses of the prisoners of our Bench [i.e. King's Bench] and similarly of the marshal of the household of the lord king, and feloniously took and led away with him there all the prisoners of the same lord king, then being in the same prisons both for felonies and also for other causes. By the records of the seventh year. Which same indictments the lord king afterwards caused to come separately before him to be terminated. And now, namely on Monday next after the feast of St Martin in this same term before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid Thomas atte Raven, having been brought by the keeper of the Tower of London at the mandate of the lord king, to be committed to the marshal. And immediately having been brought by the marshal, he came and spoke as to how he wishes to acquit himself of the aforesaid felonies and treasons, and he said that he is in no way guilty thereof, and thereupon he put himself for good and for bad upon the country. Therefore, the jury then came before the lord king both from the city of London and also from the counties of Kent and Surrey in 15 days after the day of St Martin next past, wheresoever, etc, and which, etc, to give judgement, etc. And the aforesaid Thomas in the meantime is committed to the prison of the aforesaid Tower. Afterwards, namely on Thursday next after the quindene of Holy Trinity in the seventh year of the reign of the now king, abovesaid, before the lord king at Westminster there came the aforesaid Thomas, having been brought by the keeper of the Tower of London at the mandate of the lord king, and he said that the lord king, out of his special grace, pardoned to him the suit of his peace, which pertains to him, for all kinds of treasons, felonies and misprisions, perpetrated by him, by his letters patent, which he produces here in court in these words: Richard, by the grace of God king of England and France and lord of France, to all his bailiffs and loyal subjects, to whom these present letters will come, greetings. Know you that, whereas Thomas atte Raven of Rochester is indicted on account that he and others, jointly and separately, on Wednesday in the week of Pentecost in the fourth year of our reign, at Dartford, by himself and by diverse and unknown others, made diverse risings and congregations against us and our people, and feloniously killed John Southalle of Maidstone at Maidstone on Friday next following in the aforesaid year, and broke and burnt down the house of William Topclyve on the same day and year and goods and chattels there to the value of 1,000 marks, and so continuing with others unknown, on Saturday next following, they came to the manor of Nicholas Herynges of North Cray and knocked it down, and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 1,000 marks, and perpetrated diverse other treasons against us and our people, continuing from that day until Monday next after the feast of the apostles Peter and Paul in the fifth year of our reign. And they coerced Thomas Tryvet, knight, Thomas de Cobeham, knight, John de Frenyngham, James de Pecham, and several others from the county of Kent, and imprisoned them until they made oath to be part of the assemblies of the same men, and they broke all our gaols in the aforesaid county, and caused all the felons being in the same to go out, and traitorously burnt all our evidences of our crown and our escheatery in the house of Thomas de Shardelowe of Dartford, our chief coroner, and of Elias Reyner of Strood, in the places of the aforesaid vills. And on account that the aforesaid Thomas atte Raven by the name of Thomas Raven of Southwark, on Friday next after the feast of Corpus Christi, in the aforesaid fourth year of our reign, was one wrongdoer rising up against us in the city of London, and that he, on the same day, together with other wrongdoers so rising up against us, came to the house of Reginald Aleyn at Walbrok, London, and there feloniously took one statute merchant from the aforesaid Reginald concerning a great sum, in which the same Thomas atte Raven was obliged to the aforesaid Reginald, and also forced the said Reginald to make a fine of ten marks with the said Thomas atte Raven because of fear of death there. And on account that the aforesaid Thomas atte Raven of Southwark was the principal and chief wrongdoer and maintainer, and feloniously and traitorously in the company of other wrongdoers before us and our people, broke the houses and dwellings of Richard Imworth and our other loyal subjects, and feloniously took and plundered their goods and chattels both in the said vill of Southwark and also in other places. And also on account that the same Thomas atte Raven by the name of Thomas atte Raven, together with other wrongdoers unknown, on Wednesday next after the feast of Corpus Christi in the said fourth year of our reign, came by force and arms, riding at Southwark in the county of Surrey, and there feloniously and traitorously to knock down and break the houses and tenements of Richard Imworth at Southwark and the houses of our prisons of the Bench and similarly the marshalcy of our household, and feloniously took and lead away there with them all the prisoners, being in the same prisons, both for felonies and also for other causes. We, out of special grace and at the supplication of our beloved and faithful earl of Stafford, have pardoned to the same Thomas atte Raven the suit of our peace, which pertains to us against him, for all kinds of the aforesaid treasons, felonies and misprisions, perpetrated by him, as is aforesaid, whereof he is so indicted, charged or appealed, and also outlawries, if any have been published against him by these occasions, and we grant thereupon to him our firm peace. In such a way, nevertheless, that he should stand trial in our court, if anyone wishes to speak against him about the premises or any of the premises, notwithstanding that the same Thomas atte Raven lately in our Parliament amongst others was excepted that he should not have our grace or charter in this regard. In testimony of which matter, we have caused these our letters to be made patent. Witnessed by me, myself, at the city of Salisbury on the 30th day of May in the seventh year of our reign. He also produces a certain writ of the lord king of close, directed to the justices here, about not troubling the aforesaid Thomas contrary to the tenor of the aforesaid letters of the lord king, whose date is at Westminster on the 20th day of June in the seventh year of our reign. By pretext of which letters, the aforesaid Thomas seeks that he be delivered from the prison of the lord king. And once the aforesaid letters of the lord king had been inspected and fully examined, it is considered that the aforesaid Thomas should go thereupon without day. Margin: Without day.
