Et quod eadem Iohanna simul cum aliis venit apud Turrim Londoniarum tanquam principalis ductor et manus primo violentas in Simonem nuper archiepiscopum Cantuariensem et fratrem Robertum Hales nuper priorem Sancti Iohannis Ierosolymitani in Anglia iniecit et eos extra Turrim Londoniarum traxit et decapitari precepit videlicet die veneris proxima post festum Corporis Christi anno supradicto et insurrecciones combustiones et felonias predictas fecit felonice et proditorie die et anno predictis etc. |
Text (English translation) | Middlesex. Jurors of the various hundreds of the aforesaid county at Westminster present that Joanna wife of John Ferrour of Rochester in the county of Kent went as the chief perpetrator and leader of a great society of rebellious wrongdoers from Kent on Thursday 13 June 1381 to the Savoy in the county of Middlesex and, as an enemy of the king, burned the said manor; she seized a chest containing £1000 and more belonging to John, Duke of Lancaster, and then she put the said chest into a boat on the Thames and made off with it, all the way to Southwark, where she divided the gold between herself and others. And on Friday 14 June 1381 the said Joanna went as head of the said company to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England and made a fire there and completely burnt that house, and carried off two horses loaded with wool worth 6 marks. And the same Joanna together with others went as chief leader to the Tower of London, and laid violent hands first on Simon, lately archbishop of Canterbury, and then on Brother Robert Hales, lately Prior of St John of Jerusalem in England, and she dragged them out of the Tower of London and ordered that they be beheaded. And she committed these insurrections, arsons and felonies feloniously and treasonably on the aforesaid day. The sheriff of London is ordered to arrest Joanna; she appears before the King's Bench on the Thursday after the octave of St Martin and is committed to the Marshalsea; she is led from the from the Marshalsea and asked how she wishes to respond to the aforesaid felonies and treasons, and she says she is not guilty and places herself upon the country. The jury come and say she is not guilty; she is released upon the surety of William Pren parson of the church of Wormstone, Walter Halle, John Base and John Lowet. |
