Text (English translation) | Middlesex - The jurors of several hundreds of the aforesaid county heretofore, namely in the Michaelmas term 5 Ric II [29 September 1381], present that Richard of Uttokcestre, parson of the Lyminge [Kent] on Friday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richrad II [14 June 1381] feloniously and treasonously fotrewarned (summoned) Richard Mugge of Westminster and divers other felons and traitors of the lord king, and insurgents against the lord king and his loyal subjects, to seize Richard de Imworth, marshal of the Lord King lying in his prayers at Westminster at the shrine of St Edwards in the church of St Peter's abbey Westminster. Indeed, Richard Mugge and the others by procurement, abetment and help of the aforesaid Richard to Uttokcestre feloniously and treasonously seized the aforesaid Richard Imworth on the aforesaid day, year and place, led him out of the aforesaid church and feloniously and treasonously killed him. And they say precisely (clearly) that the aforesaid Richard of Uttokcestre was the reason for the death of the aforesaid Richard of Imworth and (he was) a leader of the aforesaid insurgents. Summary: Richard of Uttokcestre surrenders himself on 22 April 1382 and is asked how he will plead. He says he is not guilty and puts himself on the country. A jury finds Richard not guilty, and he is released ('eat inde quietus'). Richard Mugge surrenders on 19 May 1382 and when asked how he will plead he produces a pardon, dated 27 February 1382. After deliberation by the judges and after he provided surety, i.e., Richard Gardyner, William Thornton, Roger Briole and John Hunne he is released 'sine die'. |
